Gigi Wu, a 36-year-old Taiwanese woman known as the “Bikini Hiker” because she climbed mountains in swimwear, has died after a fall while hiking in central Taiwan. Wu used a satellite phone to call for help on Sunday, eight days into a solo hike, after she fell down a 65-foot (20 meters) valley in Yushan National Park, which is home to Taiwan’s highest peaks that reach almost 13,000 ft (4,000 meters). However, bad weather prevented a rescue helicopter from reaching her three times. A rescue mission sent out on foot discovered her body around midday Monday, but she was already dead. In an interview in 2018, Wu said she began to post bikini photos at the summit after she lost a bet with a friend a few years ago. She chronicled her love of climbing and hiking mountains on her Facebook page. She was an experienced hiker who used proper equipment and precautions. (📷: G哥比基尼的高山足跡 / Facebook)

A video of a principal of an elementary school in China leading hundreds of students in a shuffle dance has gone viral recently. Zhang Pengfei, the principal of the school in Shanxi Province, reportedly learned the shuffle dance himself and taught his students because he wanted to make sure they exercised more. Zhang said that students now spend too much time in front of computers and phones instead of doing activities outdoors so he hoped to change that by leading them in a dance on the playground during break 🇨🇳🕺 (📹: Newsflare)

More than 10,000 students in Belgium skipped school last Thursday, braving the rain and cold to join a march in Brussels to demand action on climate change. This is the second time students have demonstrated after an initial march last week. They are hoping to turn the protests into weekly events until the government releases a clear and effective plan for fighting climate change. “There is actually no point going to school if our world is going to die,” a 16-year-old demonstrator Mariam told BBC News. Some schools have shown understanding for students who skipped school according to the AP. One director of a school told a local newspaper that “education has to turn youngsters into mature citizens. By their actions, they proved that they are.” 🇧🇪✊️🌏 (📷: EPA, AP, Getty)

A proposed statue of Satan by José Antonio Abella, an artist from Segovia, Spain, has caused a controversy after locals complained that it was “too friendly.” The local council commissioned the statue, inspired by a local legend that Segovia’s famous Roman aqueduct was built by the devil in a single night, last year to help boost tourism to a less-visited part of Segovia’s Old Town, a Unesco heritage site. As a result of a petition signed by more than 5,400 city residents saying that the statue – which shows the devil smiling while taking a selfie on a phone – “exalts evil” and is “offensive to Catholics,” a judge temporarily halted the installation of the statue. However, on Thursday, the judge dismissed the complaint and ordered the complainants to pay $568 in legal costs. Abella told the New York Times that he was surprised and hurt by the controversy, adding that his statue had nothing to do with religion but the Segovian myth instead. The statue could be installed as early as this week, according to officials 😈🇪🇸 (📷: segovia_es / Twitter)

Thousands of people, including Colombian president Ivan Duque and his predecessor Juan Manuel Santos, took the streets on Sunday to rally against violence and demand peace, after a car bomb at a police academy in the capital Bogotá killed at least 21 people and injured dozens of others on Thursday. Tearful protesters chanted “no more terrorism” and handed flowers to visibly emotional police officers, who lined the streets to show support for the police cadets, aged between 18 and 23, who had been killed in the attack. Officials say the car, which was carrying about 175 pounds of explosives, broke through checkpoints onto the grounds of a police academy before detonating minutes after a promotional ceremony for police officers. Colombia’s defense ministry said the car driver was a member of the National Liberation Army (ELN), the country’s largest remaining guerrilla group. The group did not claim responsibility for the bombing, but it has stepped up attacks against the government since its rival, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or the FARC, signed a peace deal with the government in 2016, according to the New York Times 🇨🇴🕊 (📷: Getty, AP, Reuters)

WARNING: This post contains graphic images. A gas pipeline in the Mexican town of Tlahuelilpan in the state of Hidalgo exploded on Friday night, killing at least 79 people and leaving dozens injured. Authorities said the blast was caused by an illegal tap used to steal fuel. At least 81 people remain hospitalized, with some in serious conditions, according to officials. Some patients had more than 80% of burns on their bodies and their organs were compromised. In the hours before the explosion, thousands of people reportedly gathered around the geyser of gas. The explosion comes amid a gas shortage in the country, and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has come out strongly against fuel theft. López Obrador vowed on Saturday to redouble his fight against fuel theft until it is completely eradicated, and the governor of Hidalgo urged citizens not to be complicit in fuel theft, writing on Twitter that "what happened today in Tlahuelilpan should not be repeated.” (📷: Getty, Reuters, AP)

Canadian air traffic controllers sent hundreds of pizzas to their American counterparts who were working without pay through the government shutdown, which began on December 22. The president of the Canadian Air Traffic Control Association told the New York Times they wanted to “show solidarity with our American colleagues. In our society, we are polite and friendly people, and this gesture is part of that.” A spokeperson for the air control facility in Portland, Maine, told BuzzFeed News that the staff at the facility were very appreciative of the “amazing gesture,” and that “it’s nice to see the solidarity from the Canada Air Traffic Control Association and know they are watching out for us during this difficult time.” 🇨🇦🍕❤️ (📷: PWM ATCT)

WARNING: This post contains graphic images. At least 14 civilians have died and dozens have been injured after suspected militants attacked a luxury hotel complex in Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday afternoon. The attack on the complex, which contains a hotel, banks, and offices, began around 3 p.m. on Tuesday with an explosion that targeted three vehicles outside a bank while a suicide bomber blew up the hotel lobby, according the AP. The number of other assailants, armed with grenades and guns, was not clear, but security camera footage released to local media showed at least four armed men in the complex, according to the New York Times. The Somali militant group al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack, issuing a statement on Wednesday claiming that they carried out the attack in response to the United States’ decision to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. Kenya’s president said on Wednesday that the siege was over and all attackers have been “eliminated.” More than 700 people were evacuated from the hotel complex between the start of the attack on Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday morning. Tulip Siddiq, a British MP who is nine months pregnant, delayed the birth of her baby in order to vote on the Theresa May’s Brexit deal, because if she was not physically present in the House of Commons, she would not be able to cast her vote. Heavily pregnant Siddiq was among hundreds of MPs who had vowed to reject the deal in Tuesday’s historic vote and went to the ballot box in a wheelchair. There is no formal maternity leave for MPs, so new mothers are usually paired with an opposition party member who also cannot vote so the overall result is not affected. Siddiq tweeted that she did not trust that her vote would be counted under the pairing system and that it was too important to take that risk. Fellow MPs and people are now expressing their outrage at the government for not implementing proxy voting quick enough, despite MPs having debated it for more than a year. May’s deal outlining the terms on which the UK will leave the European Union, which she had agreed to with the 27 EU leaders, was rejected by by 432 votes to 202 vote, an historic margin of 230, which surpasses the previous record of 166 on a vote in 1924. Siddiq is due to give birth via cesarean section on Thursday. (📹: parliamentlive.tv, BBC)
