That’s right, if someone streams your song on Spotify for less than 30 seconds then it doesn’t count and you don’t get paid. Most listeners wait to hear the first verse before deciding whether they like a track or not. Therefore, having a long intro which could bore an impatient thrill seeking listener is only going to prompt them to skip to the next track. Particularly on Spotify with all these playlists and release radars - never has there been so much choice at our fingertips. So if the start to your song doesn’t grab their attention right away then you’ve lost them, and that royalty. That is why record labels come down heavily on record producers to ensure that songs have short intros and are around 3.30 long (maximum). I’m not saying I agree with all this and it’s frustrating that our creative freedom is being stifled by rules like this (I love long intros and long songs). But if you want to break through on Spotify (which is how so many independent artists gain success these days) then you are giving yourself a massive advantage by keeping your intro only a few bars long and to making that intro really count. The music industry is all a game. You just have to play that game, whether you like it or not, if mainstream success is what you crave #playthegame #spotify #royalties #streaming #newmusic #songwriting #songs #protools #musicproducer #audioengineer #recordingengineer #studioporn #beatmaker #musicproduction #mixing #mixengineer #recordingstudio #studiolife #musicquotes #studio #producerlife
