Understanding the degrees of freedom a joint has (or should have) is what allows you to identify mobility deficits, and therefore work on them. So many people want better ankle dorsiflexion. Ain’t nobody want to understand midfoot mechanics. 🤷🏼‍♂️

FRC x FRA PRO Certification with the Miami Dolphins. At FRS we don’t debate what a good or not good exercise is... that’s having the answer before any question has been asked. Instead we ask the why, what, when, how, who, etc. At the root of finding answerable questions, we must understand how the whole “Sapien Meat-Wagon” actually works and how it is currently functioning. Not sure anyone does this better than @drmchivers.

👆🏽that’s what people told me when I told them how I‘d wake up with my shoulder in excruciating pain from sleeping with it straight up overhead and laying on it. I’d wake up and think “holy 💩. That hurts so bad. There has to be something wrong with it. This can’t be right. I don’t even want to move because I know it’s going to suck.” I was told it was just part of getting older, and that’s the way it was going to be.

I also came to a point where throwing anything with my dominant arm would kill my shoulder( I got caught in a few too many kimuras in Bjj), so I stopped throwing anything with that arm.
.
When I was training for my first Muay Thai fight, I had to stop jump roping because my other shoulder didn’t like to hang out in that externally rotated position and that would kill too. So it was jump rope, or be able to throw a punch and “That’s just the way it was.”
.
Flash forward one year into applying @functionalrangeconditioning principles and training with @hunterfitness , and this morning I literally sprung out of bed to turn off my AC unit and never at any point felt stiff, stuck, or in pain. I realized after how funny and incredible that was. I don’t remember the last time I woke up with my shoulder killing me from “sleeping wrong”.
.
Yesterday in the gym I decided to test throwing something. No pain.
.
Guess what: It doesn’t have to be that way. It’s not just because you’re getting older, and it’s definitely not something to just accept. Make your shit work nice, and that pain dissipates along with it.
.
Now I get to coach this work, and I’m so grateful to pass this knowledge on to all of my clients. Grateful for all the people in this system smarter than me who continue to share their knowledge

Training on purpose.

In this video, I’m taking my client, @sheenabalilo through shoulder flexion work, and I want to take you not just through the training, but the thought process. It always matters, and is never guess work.
.
For Sheena, we re-assessed her shoulder ROM and decided she does in fact have a trainable shoulder. She has “enough” internal and external rotation, indicating she has the workspace and capsular space for us to train. Secondly, she has no closing angle joint pain.
.
Once we established she has a shoulder, we also established she does not own true overhead shoulder flexion. As such, she has ZERO true overhead work in her traditional strength programming. If she can’t get there without load, then why would I load it and expect it to go better?
.
Since Sheena has shoulders, but is still new to this work, we are maintaining focus on internally loading the shoulder: controlling her internal environment before we ask her to control an external load (added weights in/on hand).
.
Here, we trained PAILs, focusing on architectural improvement of the tissues associated with shoulder flexion, and to increase ROM there, then followed with lift offs focusing on the regressive tissue (the shortened stuff) to: increase neural drive in that particular range, then to further solidify architectural changes and train the musculature to actually use the range of motion we opened.

One of the best parts of the #FunctionalRangeSystems Summit - in addition to all of our own practice - was seeing the masters of the system coach and train each other and themselves.

This exercise is not a starting point. It’s a specific application of the system, aimed at achieving a desired stimulus and outcome, for a specific individual.

This is true training. And masterful coaching.
