Red lips, green purse and animal print sneakers. I bought this purse a few years ago on Etsy. The lady that I bought it from told me it was vintage and that it belonged to her grandmother. I don’t have any way of knowing if it’s true or not (and it doesn’t matter), the color was just what I was looking for and I thought it had the cutest shape! What kind of accessories are you currently loving right now?

Dinner today... fried fish! We have fried red mullet, which I coated in a cornmeal and flour mixture before frying, served with rice and organic and locally grown kidney beans, topped with a sautéed red onions, tomatoes, green olives and white wine sauce. Bon Appetit! *

Take Out Spotlight...

Today’s Spotlight is on Cape Verde street food. As far as “street food culture” is concerned, in my humble opinion, Cape Verde is not making anyone’s list anytime soon lol. But from the perspective of being a Cape Verdean foodie living in Cape Verde I think it definitely deserves a mention. So here it is. In Cape Verde you will find street vendors all over selling different treats. This is the way that these vendors make a living, providing for their families while also serving society by offering cheap and tasty meals for the average person as well as low-income people who cannot afford food. They sell things like donuts, homemade yogurt, pizzas, sweets called “doces” made from coconut or peanuts, and diverse pastries like these savory pastries that I’m featuring today. They are called “pastel e rissois.” Pastel is a traditional Cape Verdean pastry made of dough(white or corn flour) that is rolled out, then a filling is added (traditionally some kind of fish), folded and fried. “Rissois” or “rissol” is a Portuguese pastry which is made of dough, filled with fish, meat or seafood, dipped in eggs and bread crumbs then fried. Both of these pastries became a part of Cape Verdean culture and gastronomy because of the shared parts our history with Portugal. I love them both but out of the two rissol is my fav, with pastel coming in at a VERY close 1 1/2 place (hahaha). I was so glad yesterday when I found a street vendor selling them in these cute bite sizes I decided to buy some to bring home to the children. Obviously it isn’t something that I eat everyday but is so worth the occasional treat. [SWIPE] to see pictures of pastel e rissois in their regular sizes.

Sharing my outfit for my baby’s birthday dinner next Wednesday. We have mustard yellow top, super cute statement earrings, gold cuff and sparkly gold minaudiere clutch. I will be wearing this with black jeans and black shoes. Since I did not have anything made in the African print fabric that the kids’ outfits we made from I wanted my outfit to match/complement the colors from the fabric as closely as possible. [SWIPE] to see the the fabric, and tell me how you guys think I did? *

***When Instagram blocks your post for no reason at all and you have to post it again. Apparently I used “too many hashtags” but I counted them and I didn’t so “no reason at all” is what I’m going with.***

In other more interesting news, today I stopped by a cake shop called “Decor Cakes” in Mindelo to order the cupcakes for Addis birthday dinner. I have ordered from them a couple of times before for Menelik’s birthday. Now that the outfits are ready and cake has been ordered the only thing left to do is to make a reservation at the restaurant we will be going to. I don’t think I need a reservation but I would rather make one than not make one, than to find out on the day of that I actually did need one! *
