I can see my wrist bones for the first time in well over a year. I can't believe that 5 days of a strict macrobiotic diet did the trick. The inflammation just fell away and now I'm able to pick up a frying pan with just one hand. I can bend more easily at the wrist. I don't moan in pain when I open my eyes in the morning. I'm healing, and I'm so grateful. I'm back in the kitchen for multiple hours each day preparing my meals, but it's worth the effort. I'm constantly thinking about balance now---not just in my yoga practice and not just in my day-to-day interactions, but also on my plate. Balancing the energy of the food---the yin of upward growing green leafy vegetables; the yang of dark miso and grounding food. Here's a quick lunch that I threw together from leftovers---a delicious buckwheat noodle bowl with shiitake broth, lotus root, cauliflower and collard greens. So good!

I really miss these two. 😥 I know that it's worth the sacrifice to be away for the week. I'm reconnecting with nature and with myself. The world is noisy, and my inner voice was definitely muffled in the hectic pace of day-to-day life. Maybe I lost my way for a bit, but I'm back. I'm inspired to reconnect with food as a healing tool. My kids aren't here with me, and that makes me sad, but I think they will be grateful to have the best version of me back home. I've been taking some time to re-assess my health, my life, and my general state of wellness. I've come to the conclusion that I can do better. I've decided to re-commit to the lifestyle that originally healed my health condition. I never really left macrobiotics behind, but if I'm being honest with myself, I loosened up too much. Even though I was still eating steamed greens and plenty of sea vegetables, I also started consuming refined flour products and sugar. That's all fine and good if I'm willing to live with the consequences, but I'm not. I'm tired of living with joints that hurt. I would love to be able to eat muffins and cookies, but I know that my illness flares up when I consume sugar. This week, I'm recommitting to do better. I'm back to studying, cooking, and living a life of balance at @kushiinstitute

If you're living a life with chronic pain, I know that you've beaten yourself up for falling short---For doing less than you wanted...For feeling like you've disappointed everyone around you...For failing. If this sounds familiar, my best advice to you is this: Stop comparing yourself to former versions of yourself, and simply commit to doing your best each day given that day's resources and energy levels. Some days, your best may be getting out of bed for a couple of hours. Other days, your best might be a jog in the park followed by a full yoga practice. Embrace whatever it is that you can do, and DO IT!!! .

Look at the size of this child😱! I can't stop staring at this photo. It's really unbelievable how much growth occurs after getting a kidney transplant. She was such a peanut for so long, and now everything has changed. Thank God. My daughter and I took this photo today at her request. She said she wanted to recreate a photo from two years ago when we both posed in splits. It makes me happy that even though she is growing and becoming her own person, she still wants to share a bit of yoga with me. So here we are...Hanumanasana and Samakonasana, side by side. 💖💖

Preparation doesn't guarantee success, but it sure makes it more likely. Tomorrow is the first day back to school for my kids, and I'm back to my routines. I know I can't do everything in the morning, so I do as much as I can the night before. Tomorrow, the kids are getting chocolate surprise pancakes. (I don't have to tell them that these pancakes include collard green and wild blueberry purée. Surprise! 😜🎉) I just finished creating a bowl of wet ingredients that will go right in the fridge, and a bowl of dry ingredients that I will cover and leave on my countertop. In the morning, I just need to mix my two bowls and throw it all on the griddle. Setting it up today means I'll have breakfast on the table in less than 10 minutes. Take the time today to ensure that you will do something good for yourself and your family tomorrow. ❤️

I was walking through a gallery the other day and ran across this piece of artwork. I stopped and stared at it for a while and realized that I didn't have an immediate answer to this question. I decided to take a photo to come back to this question at a later time. In the wise words of Whitesnake... I can sum up my current state of being as this: "I don't know where I'm goin', but I sure know where I've been..."

On most days, I push my body to move, even when it would rather not move at all. This week, I'm doing exactly what my body says to do. What does that look like? Lifting weights, swimming with my kids, napping outdoors and stretching before bed. Big breakfasts, light dinners, and early bedtimes. Lots of books, lots of absorbing of information, less posting of my own thoughts. Less structure, more living in the moment. I'm moving a little slower, feeling a little softer, and you know what? I'm ok with it. Sometimes, you have to be flexible, fluid, and forgiving with your life.

My bag is packed, and I'm off to teach yoga and meditation at the @kushiinstitute's annual summer conference in the Berkshires! Can't wait! And of course, I'm traveling with my favorite mala, my favorite essential oil blends, and lots of reading because...well, do you really need an excuse to read and learn? I think not.

Those of you that have been following me on Instagram for years know that I don't drink coffee. Tea is my drink of choice, and unsweetened iced tea happens to be my preference in the summer. When @dunkindonuts wanted to collaborate on a #sponsored post, I actually smiled 😊because their unsweetened iced tea happens to be my go-to drink when I'm not at home to brew my own iced tea! I order all of the unsweetened varieties--- (the unsweetened green iced tea and peach iced tea are my favorites❤️!) I love that I can avoid the sugar and get drinks on the run that are consistent with the healthy lifestyle that I'm trying to live each day.💖💖

Kale-quinoa mini burgers in lettuce cups! Lunch is served, and I'm so happy that my friend shared her delicious recipe with me. Every day can't be a home-cooked lunch, but you just have to do your best and get the good stuff in when you can. ❤️

For the most part, you get back what you put out. That's the way life works. If you want results, work hard. If you want friends who will be there for you, be there for them. Show up. Every day. Every time.
