'Art is not so much talent as character ... it's what you are, the qualities of the person.' Happy Birthday John! You're quite the character.

Some scholars think the Pre-Raphaelites reflected an acute social conscience that sought to draw attention to the plight of the downtrodden in an unjust society. John Roddam Spencer Stanhope's 'Thoughts of the past' may be a sympathetic rendering of a blighted life—the promise of which has withered, like the flowers at her side. Stanhope was born #otd 1829. Link to tickets in bio.

Hats off to Robert Braithwaite Martineau, born #otd 1826. The Pre-Raphaelite illustrates a captured soldier's careful attention to a fragile cyclamen—with cultivation and nurturing, something can flourish even in a hostile environment. 'Love & Desire: Pre-Raphaelite Masterpieces from the Tate' is now on. TIckets via link in bio.

Russian revolutionary Alexandra Exter was born #otd 1882 – her innovative designs featured in the Ballet Russes radically transformed notions of stage craft. She used mirrors and created a multiplicity of spatial planes, vertically activating the space through the use of staircases and platforms. See her beautiful designs on Level 1, FREE.

Today, @thedesignfiles explore the rich symbolism in one of 'Love & Desire's most engaging works—Robert Braithwaite Martineau's 'The last day in the old home' 1862. Through a series of still life photographs, they illuminate the cautionary tales embedded in this painting. Every painting tells a story. Swipe and see insta-highlights for more.

Find photographs by Australian artist @billhensonphoto that line the walls as you enter 'Love & Desire'. Henson’s images share a preoccupation with liminal spaces with the Pre-Raphaelites. His photographs straddle the thresholds that separate light and dark, day and night, materiality and immateriality, life and death, young and old. He borrows some of the Pre-Raphaelites’ pictorial strategies—including the determined place held by ‘beauty’ in their work. Henson’s photograph of a floating girl revises John Everett Millais’ 'Ophelia'—instead of floating in a river, the maiden floats above the contemporary city.

In the summer heat, head to the cool forested area of the Sculpture Garden, and as your peer between the trees you'll meet a group of weathered Pukumani poles or tutini. The Pukumani ceremony is the burial ritual of the Tiwi people, involving singing, dance and making tutini from the trunk of an ironwood tree. These were once laden with vibrant colourful designs, and have been deliberately allowed to fade, following the tradition of the Tiwi people.

Supported by Indigenous Arts Partner @wesfarmersarts #tiwipeople #pukumani #tiwiislands #ausnatcoll #nationalgalleryaus

Works: Tiwi people 'Tutini' (a group of six Pukumani poles) 1984
