I read a highly inspiring caption by @laraliam the other day. She mentioned she is not interested anymore in going as far as she can because she still wants to practice when she is 90 .. and practicing dramatic variations will mess up your body so that probably won't happen (the last part is an addition of me . My practice slowed down a lot lately. I don't focus on more fancier poses, even more twisted or tangled crazyness or deeper backbends (as if my backbends are ever deep 🤪). .
I don't have any interest in wrecking my body. Who has? All I want is to take care of it, to maintain it, to honour it, to use it, to nourish it, to be proud of it. And I am proud of my body. Some days it is a stunning miracle what my aged body is capable of. Like some kind of magic (and now I hope the Queen song got stuck in your head, too ) how willingly my body is learning, adapting, healing.
When you start a practice at a young age, no matter what kind of practice .. dancing, ballet, lifting weights, swimming, football or soccer ... your body is forgiving a lot of how you treat it. Ego, competition, brute force ... it's very demanding and challenging for your “house”. You fall, you stand up, you fall again, even harder, you break a bone, it heals, you break another bone. Again it heals and you stand up again even quicker to keep up with the others. But the older you get the more you have to maintain the element of "quick". It's not about NOT falling, it's all about the speed of your recovery. Everyone who had a more or less severe injury knows that coming back too early can mess everything up and you need double or thrice as long as you thought you would need.
By now for me it's all about the ability to recover, to maintain, to keep myself mobile, to keep my house clean. Especially during this time of the year. .
This is my practice. Non-spectacular, non-fancy, inward and super slow ... just the pose as it is ... and I like it .
Take care of yourself .
