When the sun goes down at ACCB... These captivating creatures of the night demonstrate that they have nothing to envy to diurnal butterflies in terms of beauty. We regularly see these moths feeding on fallen fruits during the night hours. πŸŒ˜πŸ¦‹
In this series, we would like to feature a variety of free-ranging species we encounter during the night at our centre.

Otters are very skillful with their hands. Have a look at our Smooth-coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) manipulating his fish!

This Black Kite (Milvus migrans) arrived at ACCB as a chick when he was confiscated from an illegal wildlife trader. Unfortunately he suffered from rickets - a deformity of the bones in growing animals, resulting from inadequate diet. Birds of prey require a perfect flight ability in order to survive in the wild, as they need to be able to hunt. Due to the odd shape of his wings, this bird is regularly stepping on the flight feathers, damaging them, which compromises his survival chances in the wild. He is comfortable flying short distances in his enclosure and unfortunately will need to remain at our centre.

Meet our Indochinese Silvered Langur male "Pinky"! He has been rescued as an orphaned juvenile some years ago. Juvenile Indochinese Silvered Langurs (Trachypithecus germaini) have a bright orange fur coloration during their first months of life, which unfortunately makes them popular for the illegal trade. When he arrived at ACCB he was pink though- his previous owner had painted him. The Indochinese Silvered Langur is listed as Endangered in IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species due to habitat loss and trade. Pinky had the honor to be photographed by the amazing @joelsartore, representing his species in the Photo Ark. We think he is a natural performer. What do you think?

He might not be exactly what is considered a supermodel, nevertheless this Greater Adjutant Stork (Leptoptilos dubius) is an impressive bird. With two and a half meters of wingspan, a huge inflatable decorative pouch and crystal clear blue eyes, this endangered Marabou is our model of the day! Unfortunately, his species is listed as ENDANGERED in IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species and less than 1200 birds remain only in India and here in Cambodia. You can visit this charming guy during our guided centre tours and judge yourself...

This little fellow - a Brown Wood Owl (Strix leptogrammica) - is waiting for release in one of our aviaries. As a chick, he was confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade. Now, more than half a year later, he is old and strong enough to return to the wild.

When the sun goes down at ACCB... Look who moved into this comfortable pipe next to our main building! 🐸It is an Asian Common Toad (Duttaphrynus melanostictus). In this series, we would like to feature a variety of free-ranging species we encounter during the night at our centre.

Our dedicated team is currently taking care of a very special bird - the Giant Ibis (Thaumatibis gigantea)! The Giant Ibis not only is Cambodia's National Bird but is also one of the rarest bird species on this planet. With an estimated population of less than 300 animals left in the wild, it is listed as CRITICALLY ENDANGERED in IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species. Our colleagues from BirdLife International found this chick blown from the nest during heavy winds earlier this week and alerted ACCB due to its critical condition. Our team immediately hit the road for a 7 hours drive to reach the rescue location. The Giant Ibis chick is now being cared for at our quarantine facility at ACCB, where it receives the best care possible. As it is still not able to feed on its own, it is required to hand-feed it. Please note that this bird will not be visible during our guided centre tours. Stay tuned to follow the development of this special bird... #accb #angkorcentreforconservationofbiodiversity #kbalspean #cambodianwildlife #ibis #ibis #giantibis #nationalbird #birdsofinstagram #criticallyendangered #criticallyendangeredspecies #edgespecies #edgeofextinction #birdlifeinternational @birdlife_insta

One of the most heavily traded turtles in Cambodia- the Mekong Snail-eating Turtle (Malayemys subtrijuga)! They are often sold for religious merit release practices, human consumption and traditional medicine. Very susceptible to stress, rescued individuals often arrive in very bad condition. This species is very prone to suffer from SCUD (Septicemic Cutaneous Ulcerative Disease)- commonly known as "shell rot", a potentially lethal disease where bacteria destroy the shell and possibly enter the blood stream. They often require several months of treatment until everything has healed. Earlier this year, our team, @aquarium_innovations and @turtlesurvival colleagues have built a dedicated facility to house these turtles which accommodates their specific requirements. Did you know that they break snail shells with their strong jaws?

Look at this beautiful Asian Woolly-necked Stork (Ciconia episcopus episcopus) and his iridescent plumage. Did you know that these threatened storks are not only feeding on fish and frogs, but also rely heavily on invertebrates? You might spot this beautiful stork species during our guided tours...

This leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) is taking a nap in the sun. The leopard cat is a small wild cat species distributed all over Southeast Asia. They are still abundant, but are regularly being caught as kittens for the pet trade. Even though they are very beautiful and cute, they are still wild animals and don't make good pets! ACCB regularly receives leopard cats after they have bitten or scratched their former "owners". Most of them can be rehabilitated and released back to the wild. The cat in this picture does not show sufficient survival skills and fear of humans, and therefore needs to remain at our centre. You might spot him during the guided tours at our centre.

Meet our Grey-headed Fish Eagle (Ichthyophaga ichthyaetus)! He is a permanent resident of our big raptor aviary. You'll hear him during our guided tours, as he is very vocal and has a loud voice. This fish-eating species with an impressive stare lives in wetlands and around lakes and estuaries all across Cambodia. Habitat loss and poisoning is provoking a decline of the species, which is categorized as NEAR THREATENED in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

This female Yellow-headed Temple Turtle (Heosemys annandalii) is basking in the sun. Did you know that this species is listed as ENDANGERED in IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species? Here at ACCB, we are currently taking care of 8 individuals of this impressive species. Some of them weigh more than 10 kg! You might be able to see them basking during our guided centre tours...
