About 30,000-35,000 African lions remain in the wild today. Numbers have plummeted by around 30% in the past 20 years, and over 40% of their key populations are in decline. The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies them as "vulnerable" on its red list. Nico the golden retriever was in the right place at the right time with his human friend Julian Troi (@its_jjayjay) to catch this stunning scene in Italy’s Dolomite Mountains. “We were surrounded by wind and snow, but soon the fog disappeared and the sun shone through the clouds,” says Julian. “Even Nico seemed to be really impressed by the scenery.” 🐶 #TheWeekOnInstagram

Three-toed Sloth | Photograph by Matthijs Hollanders (@matthijs.hollanders)
.
“During a late-night hike through the Chocoan lowlands of Ecuador,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Matthijs Hollanders, “we came across a three-toed sloth close to the ground who was willing to pose for some quick photos.”

To celebrate #InternationalSlothDay, here are three facts for you about the three-toed sloth:
• The sloth is world’s slowest animal, so sedentary that algae grows on its furry coat.
• Sloths sleep in trees, and they sleep a lot — some 15 to 20 hours every day.
• The three-toed sloth emits a long, high-pitched call that echoes through the forests as “ahh-eeee” Because of this cry these sloths are sometimes called ais (pronounced “eyes”).

I’ve been quiet on Instagram the last several days because I’ve been very sick. I’m in Salta, Argentina and I came down with a very bad cold when I was in Patagonia. I was caught out in the rain while hiking on a glacier. Toss in the cold temperatures and high winds and viola!……sick.

I’m attending the Adventure Travel World Summit here in Salta and when not at the event, I’ve spent almost all my time in my hotel room sleeping and trying to recover.

End result? Not a lot of activity on Instagram.

I’m feeling much better now, however. Still have a bit of a cough, but other than that, the major symptoms are gone.

I’m here in Salta for 3 more nights and then I head back to US. I’ll be home in Minneapolis for 6 days before I head to Portland, Oregon for another conference. After that I head to London for what I hope will be my last big conference of the year. If you are in Portland or London, let me know if you’d like to meet up.

Nothing like hiking the Swiss alps in the middle of the night and getting lost for 4hrs w/ iPhone flashlights to lead the way and still managing to end up here 5 min before sunrise 🌄 Thanks to my brother @linomeoli for following me on this amazing Swiss adventure, wouldn't have been the same without you fam. Tip: If you plan to hike from Zermatt to Stellisee for sunrise do not follow the google maps🚶🏽directions!!! Prob a bad idea for any hike 😅

Hydra by night. A perfect long weekend getaway. In mid-September, the heat backs off and the water is still warm. A long trek or two gives good coverage of the island. Food is excellent, especially if fish and seafood are your thing and you don't mind feta, local cheeses, and Greek wine. Throw in an afternoon boat ride along the southwestern shore, a few dips in the Gulf of Hydra, some late afternoon strolls and a lie-in or two and you'll have the makings for a perfect shoulder/mid-season break.

Hot Rock
Spiking from inky storm clouds, a white-hot thunderbolt spears the plateau during a summer storm in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. The monument comprises 300,000 unspoiled acres that cross both Arizona and Utah and contain steep cliffs, deep canyons, and sandstone formations.

This weekend we are showcasing Your Shot images selected in August for 'Photo of the Day' from NatGeo.com.
