The Duel | Photograph by Sonalini Khetrapal (@photography.nona)
.
“The open and arid landscape of Etosha National Park in Namibia is truly stunning. The goal of my trip was to photograph zebras with their striking coats across this backdrop,” writes Your Shot photographer Sonalini Khetrapal. “A herd of zebras arrived at the waterhole to quench their thirst. Suddenly there was chaos and thick dust clouds blinding our vision. Within moments, two male zebras emerged from the dust, landing blows at each other with their hooves and heads. The duel only lasted a few minutes, but it gave me an opportunity to capture this heavily charged moment.”

A leatherback sea turtle crawls back to the sea after laying her eggs on the beach at Sandy Point, located on the island of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. Listed as vulnerable, this species of sea turtle has an ancestry that dates back more than 100 million years. Today they face a number of anthropogenic stresses - including entanglement in fishing gear, poaching and climate change - which affects the sex of turtle hatchlings. Sandy Point is a National Wildlife Refuge, managed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service who are responsible for protecting these nesting beaches. The combination of conservation efforts here and in the nearby Buck Island Reef National Monument have benefitted sea turtle species in this region.

I made this photo under moonlight at 2am, after weeks of working at night on these beaches. Being in this place with these ancient animals was like traveling back in time to a primordial Earth.

This picture won first place in the Reptiles and Amphibians Category of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition on October 17th in London.

Photographed for the February 2017 cover story in @natgeo about saving our oceans.

“I love connecting with people,” says documentary photographer Samyukta Lakshmi (@samlaks). “I think it’s a privilege when people open up their lives to you and let you tell their story through photos.”
Samyukta is currently on the ground in her hometown of Bangalore, India, for the five-day #Diwali festival, a Hindu holiday celebrated throughout the world. “Diwali is the festival of lights,” she explains. “It is the celebration of good over evil, light over darkness.”

Nothing like hiking the Swiss alps in the middle of the night and getting lost for 4hrs w/ iPhone flashlights to lead the way and still managing to end up here 5 min before sunrise 🌄 Thanks to my brother @linomeoli for following me on this amazing Swiss adventure, wouldn't have been the same without you fam. Tip: If you plan to hike from Zermatt to Stellisee for sunrise do not follow the google maps🚶🏽directions!!! Prob a bad idea for any hike 😅

The Andes are pretty incredible. Taking off today and going all the way north to the other end of the country in Salta. Temperatures will be much warmer. I got a nasty cold here so I’m looking forward to warm weather and sun.

Hydra by night. A perfect long weekend getaway. In mid-September, the heat backs off and the water is still warm. A long trek or two gives good coverage of the island. Food is excellent, especially if fish and seafood are your thing and you don't mind feta, local cheeses, and Greek wine. Throw in an afternoon boat ride along the southwestern shore, a few dips in the Gulf of Hydra, some late afternoon strolls and a lie-in or two and you'll have the makings for a perfect shoulder/mid-season break.
