“The way that the glass behaves is often very snakelike,” says Eli Hansen, who founded Asp and Hand (@aspandhand) with his wife Blair in 2017. “The name is a reminder that anything can happen,” she says. The pair knows this well; both Eli and Blair were diagnosed with cancer at different points in life. Early in their relationship, Eli was treated for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Years later, after the birth of their two daughters, Blair designed the first of the family’s signature cups while she underwent radiation therapy for oral cancer. “The cups became my salvation,” she says.⁣⁣

Photos by @michaelchristopherbrown | Palestinian children in Balata Refugee Camp, the largest refugee camp in the West Bank. Balata has a population of 30,000 residents in a .25-square-kilometer area, the majority of whom are under age 25. In 1950 the UN gave these refugees, originally from Jaffa, shelter in this tiny area near Nablus, which is now densely populated. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, which last year was subject to hundreds of millions of dollars in budget cuts by the Trump administration, funds a school in the Balata camp with approximately 5,000 pupils. Other programs include the Yaffa Cultural Center, which operates a guesthouse, children’s theater and cinema, children’s library and media center, but with the budget cuts, it's seeking donors to fund the center. From 1980s through the early 2000s, Balata residents played a leading role in the first and second intifadas.

I’m sure everyone who is reading this is familiar with Uluru, aka Ayer’s Rock, in Australia.

What you might not know is that the official name of the park it is located in is Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

So what is with the Kata Tjuta part? That is focus on today’s post.
There are actually TWO massive rocks out in the middle of the Australian outback. Uluru I’m not going to focus on too much because it is well known. The other is called Kata Tjuta. (To be technical, Kata Tjuta isn’t one rock. It is a collection of them.) The two rocks are not far apart from each other. Kata Tjuta is visible from Uluru and vice versa. Unlike Uluru, it isn’t quite one massive rock. It has large cracks and crevices that you can walk in.

The highest point of Kata Tjuta is actually higher than Uluru.
Most visitors to the park visit Uluru and nothing else. The number of people who take the time to visit Kata Tjuta is significantly less than the number that go to Uluru. During my first trip to the park in 2008 we didn’t visit Kata Tjuta and no one even mentioned it.

On my second trip there in 2013, we visited during one of our days and it was a great experience, with very few people. Uluru can be incredibly crowded at sunrise and sunset, where as Kata Tjuta is pretty much empty.

If you are going to travel all the way to the middle of Australia, you owe it to yourself to see both parts of the park.
FYI, the last image in this set is a public domain photo taken from the International Space Station in 2010. I added it just do you can get a better idea of what the area is like.
