⠀⠀⠀

Former USSR Missile Base in Karmėlava, Lithuania ☢️ (Part 4/4).
Thermonuclear warhead storage section (РТБ).
This is "Mordor" of the entire area. The most secured, the most important and the most lethal object of all.
After you get through the security checkpoint (3rd one), your eyes automatically stick to a massive face of Lenin on the wall, framed with Soviet propaganda slogans. Since then you know - he's watching you.
You continue walking with the eyes of "Товарищ" on your back until you notice two large hangars. Each consists of two sections - technical (all the necessary tech-support for the nuclear weapon so it's all pampered and comfy, i.e. maintenance of constant temperature) and then storage section. If there's any radiation abnormality in this area - you are most likely to find it here (no worries, there's higer radiation level during your flight on the plane). I won't discuss the characteristics of this 2.3 megaton beast in detail (see the past articles), but one equipped missile would be enough to wipe out an entire city with suburbs.
During the Cold War, civil Lithuanian people who lived nearby had no idea that nuclear weapon was just around the corner. They knew there were secret Soviet military bases in the woods, but didn't know their purpose. But how could they? Soldiers used to organize macabre shows to scare civilians off (i.e. by throwing live dogs on the triple electric fences to show their shock capacity, so no one would even dream of breaking into the area). And you know what? None of these bases have ever been used according to their purpose. Not a single missile has ever been launched. All this effort, time and money invested had absolutely no purpose whatsoever. I guess that's just a definition of a Cold War era.

Former USSR Missile Base in Karmėlava, Lithuania ☢️ (Part 3/4).
Missile storage/assembly/launch section.
This section has its own security checkpoint (КПП), anti-radiation bunker, headquarters, missile storage and assembly hangars, missile tech-support hangars, process control bunkers and 4 launch pads. The area was designed in a way that the missile launch process would have taken approximately 3 hours (including attachment of thermonuclear warhead, addition of oxidiser and fuel, transportation to the launch pad and actual launch). In case of war, the military officers in the base wouldn't have had a clue where they would be sending the missiles - co-ordinates would have been received directly from Moscow as a code, with no particular location specified.

Garages and technical service complex.
All types of vehicles - personal and military - that belonged to this particular division have been kept and serviced here. Condition of the buildings is not great, however the authentic signs on the walls/ceiling are still visible to this day. Also the graffiti, disposed tyres and welcoming posters 🚷⚠️

Former USSR Missile Base in Karmėlava, Lithuania ☢️ (Part 1/4).
Housing/Administration section.
Another piece of Cold War nuclear heritage in Lithuania. And also, one of the best preserved since it's been completely abandoned after Soviet army left.
While you drive around the asphalt-free fields and woods by the Karmėlava Airport, counting the potholes and stones that hit your car, you get a sudden relief when the tyres finally touch a solid surface with a sound of dum-dum-dum. That's a rhythm of a road to almost every former USSR military object, since the roads have been paved with concrete blocks (infrastructure at its best). Karmėlava Missile Base was equiped with R-12 (SS-4 Sandal, according to NATO classification) ballistic missiles, capable of carrying thermonuclear warheads.
Perimeter of this military facility is divided into 2 main sections: housing/administration/technical and missile storage/assembly/launch (traditional structure).
The Housing/Administration part contains the main checkpoint, anti-radiation bunkers, barracks, canteen, headquarters, military officer club and water storage building.

Former USSR Missile Base in Gulbiniškiai, Lithuania ☢️
HISTORY. Built in 1959-1960 during the Cold War era. Housed 2nd division of Karmėlava missile regiment. This object is co-related and interconnected with other 2 nearby objects - Dumsiai Military Base and Gaižiūnai Air Base.
STRUCTURE. Like any other former USSR over-ground R-12 missile base, it has a technical section - transport garages where they provided local mechanical/technical service. Also administration/housing section (ruined to bits today). The last but not least - hangars for missile assembly/storage, accompanied with 4 launch pads (each designed to launch 2 missiles at a time). However, there were 2 unusual extras - Radio and Training Regiment sections (explains why there were outdoor shooting range and Signaller Battalion established in a nearby base).
STORY. We arrived just before the sunset after exploring another base in Karmėlava (1st division). We wanted to see as much as possible until it gets dark. You probably wonder why are we wearing gas masks. Radiation? No. Well, there's higher radiation level than normal in some places indeed, but it usually has no significant impact on human body. My main concern was toxic missile fuel (I got poisoned before while exploring the Project 2 area, so I didn't want to repeat this "pleasant" experience). Note - there were authentic warnings in Russian on the walls urging soldiers to avoid spillage and not to smoke in the fuel storage buildings. Also the phrase "САМИН - кровяной ЯД" ("Samin" - bloody poison") does not sound very optimistic.
Overall, the trip was successful. We didn't have a chance to see another 2 bases, but we will in a nearby future.
I am writing another article about missile fuel at the moment - its chemical composition, use and toxicity (just to show that gas mask in this case is no game).

Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP)
This massive object was once the most powerful NPP not only in the USSR, but in the entire world (yes, even more powerful than the one in Chernobyl). At one stage it supplied 80% of Lithuania's electricity, thus have been included into the Guiness World Records.
The primary construction plan in 1978 contained four type RBMK-1500 reactors (each of 1500MW electrical and 4800MW thermal power capacity), however only 2 reactors have been built and put in operation. Construction has been suspended straight after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. Both reactors of INPP have been shut down one after another in 2004 and 2009 respectively due to EU safety agreement. I will not get deeper into INPP's history and technical data, it's pure physics and you can google it yourself (if you're a nerd like me). So what is going on in there at the moment? Nothing but decommissioning project. The object is not abandoned for sure, but entry is strictly forbidden for random visitors. However you can still explore the perimeter around the place (and believe me, it's an entire town). It's awful that so much money has been invested in the past and everything is going to waste now - territory, employment and massive amounts of cheap power (for local and international use). Also, the closing down project is probably even more expensive than the construction itself ever was.
However, I'm not supporting nuclear power production at all. Even though it might look like a cheap and easy solution, it always comes with a great price. I think none of such producers can take the responsibility of safe waste disposal (safe? is it really? how much do we really know?). And what about the technical aspect? Technology breaks, wears off, produces faults on regular basis. Can we afford another disaster due to an error?

Karosta, the "War Port" of Liepāja, Latvia.
Some people of Liepāja say that this particular neighbourhood is a scar of the city - crime, drugs and neglect. I have a different opinion and I will explain you why.
Just before leaving the city centre, we approached a wooden bridge. We knew it led to Karosta, the former military port built for the Tsar Alexander III in 1890-1906. Later this port housed USSR navy (Балтийский флот).
During the Soviet occupation, Karosta was completely separated from the city itself and was accessible to military personnel only.
I cannot explain the power of contrast in this place, where the old Russian elegance intersects with the traces of rough Soviet militarism (note the pictures of an Orthodox Cathedral behind the apartment block). Every street of Karosta is surrounded by either abandoned red brick mansions or Soviet epoch apartment blocks.
Anyway, the atmosphere was rather sad than rough. So many things happened in the place now forgotten.
On our way home we tried to find an access to the port itself (because there was a submarine base and a massive hangar we wanted to see), but we hit the security fence every time (no trespassing, no cameras etc.). One time even a security guard came out of the cabin just a second after we approached the gate. So we gave up. For now.
Finally, I would like to say that even though Karosta is called a nasty scar of Liepāja, it's a beautiful one. Like the one you get in a battle. The one you can be proud of.
I want to go back there already and immerse myself into this magical land of contrast again
(and the submarine base, ha).

Former USSR military air base in Vaiņode, Latvia.
Just after our last adventure in Mažeikiai (Lithuania), we decided to visit our "braliukas" (Latvian brother) on our way home. We knew this place existed, but we had no plan, no directions and no GPS, so we used our 6th sense instead. What we found was pure heaven I must say. When you arrive through the woods with a Suzuki bike and there is a 2500x60m runway in front of you, losing your sh*t is mandatory.
But first things first. History.
This massive object is abandoned since 1993, but was in full use since WW1. Germans used to keep their "Zeppelins" there during the WW1 and the air base was used by German Sturmgeschwader4 during the WW2. Before the Cold War, the base was taken over by USSR. It was mainly used for Su-15, Su-27 and MiG-23 fighter plane operations. Ballistic missiles R-14 have also been deployed there. How come? Well, there was a 3-silo R-14 missile base (Р-14 "Чусовая" ШПУ) standing nearby. Was? Yes, angry "braliukai" from the government recently destroyed this brilliant monument before I had a chance to see it (how inconsiderate).
Back to the point. Besides a massive runway, there are also ~20 plane hangars all over the place. Feels like you are on a different planet, no sh*t.
Today this place is used for drift events and well, for other crazy people (like myself) to see.
We had a great urbex experience and tested our Suzuki to the max. Also, got a flat tyre. In another country. How brilliant is that... Thanks to all random people on our way home who helped us not to die (by letting us inflate that damn tyre in their garages).

Tank IS-2 (Iosif Stalin 2).
This Soviet beast weights 46 tonnes and is equipped with 122 mm gun. According to local stories, it came over from Latvia during WW2, in 1944. However, the journey didn't end that well. The tank accidentally drove onto the mine and exploded, all crew members have died. Even though the bottom of it has been fixed in order to expose this object to public as a monument, you can still notice that it's still heavily deformed.

The moment, when I fell in love with "Dvina".
Plokštinė Missile Base is an underground system, composed of 2-level bunker connected with 4 silos. It was built during the Cold War period, near lake Plateliai, Lithuania. This particular "Dvina" is the first ever underground missile base built by Soviet Union (and not the last one). The 4 silos housed R-12 ballistic missiles with thermonuclear warheads. One R-12 was much more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima during the WW2 (2.3 megaton vs. 13-16 kiloton). Today this place is partly reconstructed and turned into a Cold War museum (thanks God, I can't cope with Lithuanians constantly trying to eliminate this dark but also interesting page of the history, so fair play to them this time).

Привет, товарищ Ленин... 😁
Last year I had a chance to explore a very interesting object - Skrunda-1. It is a military ghost town, built in Latvia, 1963. The purpose of this town was to accommodate Soviet officers and their families. The officers have been working in the nearby radar station, which covered the Western Europe in order to detect any incoming bombs or nuclear missiles. The area of the town is large enough and contains a few rows of 5-storey apartment blocks, shop, gym, hospital, preschool, clubs for soldiers and officers, theater and cinema rooms, sauna, prison, town's headquarters, garages, massive military and storage facilities.
The place is abandoned, but in order to get through the gate, you have to pay an entrance fee (so small, can't even remember how much). There you also get a map and can explore the town all day without supervision.

I've posted a picture from the same location before, but I didn't have enough time to write about it and give you tips on how to find it.
This technical war museum is located in the northwest of Daugavpils city, in the town Svente, Latvia. We couldn't find this museum on GPS, so we searched all town and it happened to be located next to the big white mansion (town's hotel), in the middle of a housing estate (if you are approaching this town from another town Arone direction, keep right and enter Svente town on it's R side).
The entry was cheap (can't even remember, €2pp or something).
The large garage was literally stuffed with tanks, military combat and transport vehicles (such as Soviet BTR, Gaz-67, Nazi Kettenkrad SdKfz-2 etc.) and all types of artillery. The premises were being monitored, so we couldn't get inside any of the tanks or vehicles (even though it was tempting). I am extremely impressed with Latvian Soviet and post-Soviet military heritage in general. It seems that every single piece of this country is hiding massive amounts of bunkers, ghost towns, military bases and loads of war equipment. Some of their locations you can easily find on the internet, however most of them are still closed or even kept as secret.
At the moment I'm doing a project on Latvian Military Heritage, where my mission is to find out as much information as possible and learn about every single object I can find. Later on I will organize different expedition routes, based on the map I am creating at the moment. So every trip will be an unforgettable adventure.
If you know any interesting military-based places in Latvia, please leave a comment or contact me via DM. I will appreciate it.

Lyduvėnai Railway Bridge is the tallest and longest bridge in Lithuania, with 42m in height and 599m in length.
In 1916 during German occupation, soldiers built first construction which was recognized as one of the largest wooden bridges in Europe.
In 1918 Germans upgraded their construction to steel and also placed a statue of Otto von Bismarck at the top. This object was called technological masterpiece at the time.
During the WW2 (1944), the bridge was bombed and destroyed by Nazi army following their retreat.
Later during the Soviet occupation in 1951, the bridge was rebuild by their army's engineering division.
The object has been strictly secured and monitored by the Lithuanian government until 2017, since the railway transport was (and still is) too intense for people to access it safely. However, there are safe tours being organized now during the breaks between passing trains.
