Evan was scared, and not of the stereotypical things that chemo brought on; hair loss, vomiting, weight gain, or whatever else people his age feared. Evan feared the fact that he could possible die.
Death wasn’t on Evan’s agenda, and it hadn’t been for nearly three years, but life had a funny way of treating you. It made it to where the desires you once had are granted to you when you no longer want them. Deal with the consequences, because no one cares what happens.
“Evan, you’ll be starting chemo therapy tomorrow and will stay at the hospital for observation until we believe you can be released,” Doctor Carter told him and the auburn boy just nodded and smiled. He didn’t feel like smiling, but he felt obligated to.
The twenty year old boy felt like everything he did was a burden, because his mother took extra shifts, his father was paying half, and his friends were scared to come see him. Of course he didn’t blame them, but his thoughts grew lonely and he just needed a friend.
After the doctor left and Evan began to read a book his dad left him, there was a knock at the door. His shut the book quickly before placing it on the table next to his lunch.
“Come in!” He called out and there was Connor Murphy staring him down at the door.
“Connor, go in for fuck’s sake,” Luka demanded and the couple came in the room only to see a boy hooked up to all kinds of equipment.
“Holy shit,” Connor whispered out before looking at the book on the table. “Why do you have Stephen King?”
“Why don’t you have Stephen King? What are you guys doing here?” Evan asked in a rude tone, but he didn’t mean to. He enjoyed having the two here, because he didn’t feel so alone.
“Mom wanted us to come check on you, and she was right; you do look bad,” Luka stated and it only erupted a sigh from Evan.
“Thank you, my leukemia really brings out my looks,” Evan said with a chuckle, and all he wanted to do was make light of the situation. He was tired of feeling bad for himself.
“You could die,” Connor stated and Evan nodded with a sad smile.
