#蓮月焼 Rengetsu-yaki: #猪口 choko. A sake cup in the form of a lotus leaf by Japanese Buddhist nun and poet Õtagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875). Her ceramic style was much imitated and purposefully faked, was this cup pinched by her fingers? I don't know. Adopted into a Samurai familly, 'Lotus Moon' was apparently quite a beauty. The early part of her life was touched by tragedy, her husband and all five of her children died . She then spent fifty years living the nomadic existence of a nun; making pots provided a living and her poetry was celebrated. Rengetsu was prolific, turning out thousands of sencha and sake cups, incised with waka, using a bamboo stylus. It's said every home in Kyoto owned something of hers. Can anyone identify this poem? I've been thumbing through 'Black Robe White Mist' trying to spot it.
