You can walk into almost any hotel these days and find one of these - a walk-in shower. The same cannot be said for apartments. While this was one positive which came with moving, it is the only one in the entire complex. This apartment was used as a model for an accessible apartment. If no others contain a similar shower, how is the apartment truly accessible?

i find this strange... i get wanting to keep your children safe but the best way to do that is to have an open discussion about these things and make sure they they understand how to use protection etc. and i’m sure there would be a double standard when it came to their sons. thoughts?

I’m both proud and concerned. My mom has worked for @americanair for 32 years, and I am proud that she recycles and is conscious of waste on flights.
.
I’m concerned that we are going too far with straw bans... yes, plastic sucks because it never goes away and it contains toxins that enter us and our environment.
.
.
AND, simply saying that straws are unnecessary is completely ableist. Yes, straws originated largely from racism and classism—privileged individuals didn’t want to touch their lips to the same rim as others. Is us saying we want to ban them not equally as bad? After all, we’re saying that able-bodied people’s (hate that term) wishes are again more important than people with developmental or physical differences. It’s privilege all over again.
.
.
.
This is why change has to be rooted in CHOICE. Sustainable choices. Individual action. Giving PEOPLE the power to make their own decisions and move intentionally through their lives. We cannot force people to do things. It doesn’t work. We have to own up to our privilege AND make choices that reflect our values.
.
.
Please, what are your thoughts?
.
.
Inspired in part by @greenindyblog and @going.zero.waste. (And SO many others! Tag them!!!) Thanks to @jake_schnepper for posting the AA ban on his feed, that’s where I saw it first.

I think this is really important to share. I don’t fully support this in the sense that if the person who you’re reacting against has caused some sort of negative reaction then reacting in a negative way (depending on your actions) is justifiable. Otherwise, mental health shouldn’t be used as an excuse to disregard people’s bad choices.

Accountability is important!

i was taught to be ashamed of my walk. i was told it was ugly over and over again as a child, youth and still as an adult. i can remember one of my brace makers screaming at me in his office for hours, “that’s an ugly walk!!! make it prettier!!!” i was so young and i was trying to do what he told me, but it was cruel and impossible.
.
(fyi: there is no way to talk about gender without talking about ability.)
.
who says there is a “correct” way to walk? lurch, lunge, limp, sway, sashay, swing, mosey, twirl, skip, hop, swagger, shimmy, jerk, teeter, wobble, waddle, slouch, lean, reel, tilt, slip, fall, get off-balance and then on-balance again, take rests, and go as slow or as fast as you need.
.
i love my Ugly walk and i love yours too.

First pic, the car is obviously blocking the pavement - you couldn't fit a bike through that gap member mind a wheelchair #casualableism 😡 Awful road to have to go on too as cars seriously speed round that blind corner 🙄 And 2nd, this road has no pavement, and although there's a wide footpath behind hedges to the left, an arsehole farmer has chained both gates shut so it's inaccessible. We're on the road, tucking right in everytime a car comes from behind, & the car in the photo sat behind us for 5 minutes not moving, before sloooowly overtaking & glaring as he passed. What a dick 😅

I'm so sick of people's contempt for fat people. 💔 If you live in a hospital or illness community like I do, you know there's so many reasons for someone to be overweight. Here's an insight into disabled life for you. ♿️
~
~
~
VERY common conditions that lead to weight gain: thyroid disease, PCOS, eating disorders, prescription steroid use, and also ANY HEALTH CONDITION THAT REDUCES MOBILITY AND LIMITS EATING TOLERANCES TO UNHEALTH FOODS. I say "unhealthy" food loosely as they're the energy that keep these people going when they're throwing up the fiber. 👍🍎
~
~
~
And they know they're fat, treatment for fat people is so undignified. 😷 I know people with illness that are starving, but put on a lot of weight from fluid retention and constipation, so doctors accuse them of lying. I'm tube fed which means I have no control over my weight, a dietician decides. 👨‍⚕️☝️ But I also have tube fed friends who are overweight and their doctors don't discourage it because they're at risk of losing it all again(our reserves). 🌼
~
~
~
Finally, don't forget about carers. Eating healthily when the person you care for is in hospital or you work there is tough, ironically, because the only food they have is vending machine crap, an overpriced café and a fast food place next door. It's so ignorant to believe that all people can drop everything to lose weight if they want to enough. Of course we should encourage people who are at risk to get help, especially those with health conditions, but not from random strangers, not to be derogatory! This so called "health advice" is never helpful🤦 Shame should never be your source of motivation to lose weight.
~
~
~ Thin, able body privilige exists to feed diet culture and make fat people feel shit about themselves. Not because thin people are suprerior and take SUCH good care of themselves. 🙄 It's why so many of my disabled friends end up with eating disorders too. There's no perspective when it comes to fat people, we see the fat (the way we've been brought up to despise ourselves for it) before the person. Stop thinking you're helping fat people by bullying them. Even if they aren't ill and they're fat, they still deserve respect.❤️

Tonight I'd like to kindly remind you folks that not every type of disability renders someone immobile or relying on wheelchair assistance, or even just all the time (many of us can walk!), but that still doesn't mean the body can withstand being mobile for very long. Symptom severity is a constantly fluctuating experience, and disabilities are not solely physical diagnoses or obstacles; they can be emotional and mental/psychological as well. Often times, chronic illness and mental health co-occur and are interrelated.
Disabilities are not always visible. Disabilities don't need to be justifiable by your standards. Disabilities shouldn't be shameful or an invitation for judgment and stares, or irrelevant and invalidating opinions/suggestions from friends, intimate partners, family members, and strangers.
People with disabilities are a vital
(haha, get it...?💉🏥)
piece in the puzzle of diversity.
It's time we were permitted to fit right into it so we can gaze back at the whole big picture together. ♿️

This weekend was tough.⁣
I was really put through the wringer physically, emotionally and mentally. I know that my ability levels have slowly changed over the years but, this year at Hillside (a 3-day music festival), it was made apparent how different things have really become.⁣

I am continuing to learn about what my thresholds are for physical, social, mental and emotional interactions. This weekend was definitely a good lesson in learning what is too much for me. In daily life, I'm often left wondering if I'm just lazy or have a low threshold for pain because of how people and the media treat those with non-apparent disabilities. I know that what I experience is real. My pain is real even if you can't see it.⁣

I am becoming more vocal about my chronic illness not to get pity but, to share my experience and help others understand what it is like to have a non-apparent (or invisible) disability and represent for people like me.

Thank you to all of the lovely people who were so supportive, encouraging and understanding of my situation. Thank you for being so kind, as it is often hard to be kind to myself in times like this.

Straw ban 🍸
.

The whole #strawban discussion is ridiculous. It's basically just ableds telling disabled folks that they don't believe them - they don't believe some disabled people NEED #plasticstraws, they don't believe that there are many reasons why re-useable straws don't work, they don't believe there isn't an 'other' easy solution. Why have we jumped on straws as THE way to counteract all the shit we're doing to the world?? Seriously, if a disabled person is telling you they NEED something, please just believe them...I guarantee they've looked at other options & tried other solutions. Weirdly enough they know their needs best 🙄

Max Harrison Seiner. Age 9.
.
He's Doing deep breathing that he learned when he was 5 years old from @tommyrosen. I would wake up every morning and follow his Kundalini yoga videos and Max would join me. We still do the deep breaths together and it's become a way for both of us to regulate our systems when life goes sideways.
.
I'm starting to look over the notes I took during the reviews at @rencontresarles. @dimitribeck the director of @polkamagazine had such great feedback and suggestions. It made me gasp when he said it.
.
I'm getting ready to make life size photos of Max looking right into the camera. Sharp. In focus. And looking right at you. If my project is about how people don't look at him or they look but they don't see Max they see Down syndrome.... this confrontation with having Max right there. You have to look. Face the discomfort if there is any. The stereotype. Actually look at my son. So.... that's happening. Thank you @dimitribeck for this suggestion. It helped me feel so much more solid about this project .
.
And... across from those large portraits of Max Harrison will be 500 Polaroid's in a grid all showing the multi layered personality of this unique individual.
.
Should I be keeping this to myself? How can I. I'm basically bursting from being so inspired.
.
This portrait was taken with my Mamiya RB 67. ( my first camera when I got out of college ). Using @kodak Portra 400.

Hi friends! It has come to my attention, much too late, that my posts and opinions regarding reusable straws were extremely ableist. People with disabilities, medical conditions, and many many others require straws to eat, drink, and take medication. 🌻
There is a plethora of information out there that explains why metal, glass, silicone, etc are not adequate replacements for those folks that may need to use a straw multiple times a day. Much of that information has been provided from members of an already marginalized community, at a great personal cost, and I urge you to seek out this information as soon as you’re done reading this. 🌻While it is amazing that corporations are being held more accountable for single use plastic, and while I personally advocate for as many reusable items as possible, I know we are not all perfect. We are not all capable of remaining disciplined and prepared at all times. I have tried to only post content that stays true to my journey with introducing sustainable solutions to my life and simultaneously encourage others to try their hardest as well, and I would never want anyone who came across a post about a straw to feel turned off or excluded from the environmental community—which is already a very privileged group of people.🌻 I am so sorry for the flippant posts previously made regarding the use of single-use straws and sincerely hope that I did not dissuade anyone from making an effort to be a more conscientious consumer daily🌻Please know that comments/posts made are only directed towards folks who CAN drink, eat, and consume medication WITHOUT A STRAW and do not require one. All posts regarding this matter moving forward will actively reflect this.🌻 big love,
anna

An ethical cure for autism will never exist. There is no way to change someone’s entire neurology without torturous experimentation that almost certainly wouldn’t work. Some organisations (TACA and autismspeaks) can’t understand this, apparently. -🐙
{I.D.: there are two pictures of propaganda from TACA, the first one says “1 in 68 children have AUTISM” in bold red text, then shows data that references autism diagnosis saying “1 in 10,000 in 1970, 1 in 150 in 2000, 1 in 125 in 2004, 1 in 110 in 2006, 1 in 88 in 2008, and 1 in 68 in 2010” and then it says “Numbers show there is an Epidemic.” in bold. It also has multiple questionable facts, mostly about medical expenses, “In 2012, our own TACA organisation surveyed families. It identified that families were spending an average of $27,000 per year and over $50,000,000 in annual out of pocket expenses. 80% of individuals with autism are 22 years or younger. It is estimated that costs are 3 to 5 million per affected individual. In addition to medical costs, behavioural interventions for children with autism cost $40,000 to $60,000 per child per year.” The next image shows similar statistics as the first one (1 in 10,000 in 1970, 1 in 500 in 1995, 1 in 59 today) and then says, “The increase in autism needs an increase in action!” in bold. The last image says “One in 88 children are diagnosed with autism. One in every 54 boys. Talk about epidemic. Autism takes an unimaginable emotional toll on those who suffer from it and their families. Talk about pain. But there is good news too. Science and therapy techniques are changing the outlook. Talk about hope. TACA is families with autism helping families with autism. Talk about community. We need your support until there’s a cure. Talk about a good cause. And one day, we will find it. Talk about curing autism.”}

Spot the flops! I'll help you out:
1. "When the autistic kid..." Y'all already know what's up.
2. So I'm assuming this is a scenario where the autistic person is stimming or already overstimulated and this ignorant ableist classmate thinks it's annoying, and decides to trigger a potential meltdown by being a shithead and making loud noises to distress the kid. Y'all already know I'm autistic myself and if one of my classmates did this you can guarantee I'm whooping his sorry ass.
3. The response, oof what the fuck bro
4. Assuming autism = stupid or retarded, even though I literally have an IQ over 130 and autism isn't mental retardation.
5. Using #actuallyautistic (This tag is for autistic people and was made for autistic people, by autistic people)

Wow this one hit close to home. Our society has conditioned us to hate ourselves. We are taught to put ourselves through pain to reach unattainable beauty standards, to try and have the perfect body, to believe we deserve to be hurt.
When my mental illness gets bad, I punish myself for feeling sad or not wanting to spend time with people. I don't think it's normal, so I should be punished for it.
We do not have to live our lives constantly hurting ourselves or punishing our bodies. We deserve to love ourselves and accept ourselves for the mood or the shape of our bodies.
Make sure you give yourself a little extra love today. And promise to be kind to yourself 💕 -Diane

How to not piss off disabled people: I'm sorry you're injured edition
My dear outdoor community. I see so many posts from people who are recovering from injuries about getting back out hiking. I have such empathy and respect for that! As a disabled person whose disability results in frequent injuries, I am all to familiar with that process.
But I would ask those of you who are otherwise able-bodied to be mindful of how you discuss the experience. For example (and this is only one example), for some disabled people, using poles and adaptive equipment to hike only a couple of miles is our every day experience. When I see people talk about having to use these tools as a lesser experience, as something that they must overcome in order to get back to being a "real hiker," it feels very dismissive of the reality of disabled people for whom this is our "real hiker" experience.
To be clear, everyone gets to speak of their own experiences. But we should be mindful of how we frame those experiences. Disabled people have long been dismissed from the outdoor recreation community. Ability ranges greatly and there is no litmus test for who is a real hiker. That means you too, my injured abled friends. Are you hiking? Then you are a real hiker. I see such potential for injured abled hikers to ally with the disabled community.
Ableism runs deep in our culture. Let's keep examining how it influences and affects us and our relationships.

tw- suicidal thoughts, casual ableism
my meme'd response to the "oh u have depression, have u tried getting out more?"
my sweet dude, I'm out 90% of days. I run 3 times a week at twilight when the sky is beautiful and the birds are singing. as much as I love and appreciate trees I ain't gonna come off my meds anytime soon or stop therapy because ignorant folx misunderstand mental illness. don't get me wrong, fresh air and exercise, or even just a light walk outside can do wonders for your mental health, but pls stop acting like it's the be-all end-all solution to everything. I still need my antidepressants to even get the energy and motivation to be able to go outside without feeling like death. they stop me feeling like I should lob myself in front of every passing vehicle, they help me to rationalise my thoughts and take steps to get better. I'm on fluoxetine ("prozac") and it's done wonders for me. I ran out of it a few days ago and funnily enough the only "withdrawal effects" I got during the 3 days without it were general fatigue -which I get anyway- and lack of dreams. once I got back onto it I started my usual vivid dreaming. anyone else's meds have weird and wonderful side effects? it's obviously one that I don't mind because I get a lot of inspiration from my dreams. plus they're damn enjoyable lmao~c

I've seen waaay too many posts 👏🏽 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 for plastic straw bans and I'm sick of this ignorant and ableist b.s. So let's spread the message far and wide because while I give a fuck about the environment, I deeply care for people and the rights of people living with disability to have access to something that enables them to drink, eat and take their medicines. Don't go off with comments about metal or silicon straws (see my insta stories for a comparison of why alternatives aren’t necessarily better or safer). Google why these alternatives aren't suitable. Learn and empathise with those living with disability and chronic illness. Ask people who live with disability what they want! There are far bigger problems in this world than plastic straws. I'm here to amplify and raise awareness and to tackle those bigger and complex problems that affect the daily lives (and the survival) of my fellow humans. I hope you can begin to understand the ableism you perpetuate and be aware of it in future.
