The only disappointing part of #grandstaircaseescalante, though. What an amazing place, all of it! #savegrandstaircase

Hard to see the greater good in reversing more than a hundred years of Antiquities Act precedent with this downsizing proclamation. Hard to believe it's legal, and impossible to believe it's right...

But back to my issue. Where, exactly, did they hide the cats I see promised? #greatergood

Explored one of the latest national monuments. Gold Butte is nearly 300,000 acres and we saw almost none of it. But we did find petroglyphs. And very nearby we found bullet marks in the rock. An example why culturally and scientifically significant lands need to be protected. Because people often just plain suck. .

Hello #humpday! Have a good Wednesday, friends. 🐾💛

#grandstaircaseescalante is too much fun to downsize. Opening it to oil, gas, and coal would be a huge mistake. That's #bipartisan #nonpartisan truth. ❤️🇺🇸💙

Canyoneering is thirsty work!

Celebrating my first #slotcanyon with a tall bowl of water.

The Zebra Canyon hike is in the downsized part of #grandstaircaseescalante #nationalmonument. Turns out the new boundaries were designed by coal, oil, & gas companies. Who would've guessed...

New things are scary, and Zebra was my first slot canyon. We took it #stepbystep, and I felt GREAT at the end! 💪🏻

Zebra Canyon in #grandstaircaseescalante is one of those places affected by #publicland policy. Grand Staircase-Escalante #nationalmonument was downsized and is likely to be opened for oil & gas development.

Zebra Canyon is amazing!! And it's popular, always 10-20 cars at the trailhead. Is this the right place to remove National Monument protections?

Zebra Canyon itself is still within the revised boundaries, but the trailhead and hike down to Zebra Canyon are not. Trump's December 2017 Proclamation removed National Monument status from a narrow strip of land around the main road visitors use to see the canyons and cliffs of Grand Staircase-Escalante.

The cost of turning this land over to the oil, gas, and coal companies who designed the new boundaries is significant. Escalante's economy is based on outdoor recreation. This special place draws people from all over the world, as well as hikers, canyoneers, RVers, #vanlifers, hunters, backpackers, photographers, climbers, Jeep-ers, and vacationers who are closer to home.

Industrial scale wells and mines would change that.

Wide paved roads for heavy equipment, inherently noisy operations, and the lights that are part of it all would eliminate the quiet desert nights and millions of sparkling stars that so many visitors love.

The legality of downsizing is questionable at best. One large lawsuit is ongoing, but land is already being opened for this development. Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance @protectwildutah is one of the organizations suing to restore Grand Staircase-Escalante's original 1996 boundaries. #keepitpublic

Climb the Hill @accessfund and @americanalpineclub takeover Day 2 // Did you know that nearly 60% of all climbing in America is located on public lands?
.
The Antiquities Act of 1906 gives the President the executive authority to proclaim a national monument in order to protect special natural, historic, scientific, and cultural areas. It is a conservation tool that has been used by both Republican and Democratic presidents to create nearly 150 national monuments, protecting crown jewels like Bears Ears in Utah, the Needles in California, and Devils Tower in Wyoming. .
But this conservation tool is in danger. A new bill has been introduced seeking to dismantle the Antiquities Act. The National Monument Creation and Protection Act is a dangerous bill with a misleading name.

You had me at Rock Climbing. 10 years ago I was a college student who just got into rock climbing and didn’t even think about how my life would forever change because of the sport. Here I am today in D.C. as a climber, advocate, and community leader for my second time this year to now #climbthehill with my climbing gear, chalk-bag and power suit at hand. Access Fund and The American Alpine Club have brought together rock climbers from all over the U.S. to speak on the importance of environmental conservation, access, funding, and leaving our public lands in the hands of the PUBLIC. In the most professional way of course.
.
.
As a constituent it is my responsibility to speak to my CA representatives about the issues that I care about. I am here in D.C. because I believe this goes far beyond climbing, and political party lines. It’s about doing what’s right, what makes sense, the Outdoor industry is an economic powerhouse and the numbers do not lie. I am super excited to be representing CA! We’ve got sooo many things to talk about. Prop 68, AB 1918, San Gabriel National Monument, Williamson Rock, Land and Water Conservation Fund and so much more. Can’t wait to #climbthehill and encourage policymakers to protect our public lands. Because public lands, outdoor recreation, access, and proper management matter.

Mendenhall Loop on the #SanJuanRiver near #BearsEarsNationalMonument, #Utah
The Mendenhall Cabin (lower left) is a testament to failed mining in the #BearsEars region. An exaggerated (or erroneous) newspaper report in 1892 sparked a small gold rush on the San Juan River, but the thousands of would-be miners who showed up found the flour gold in the river silt too scarce and too tricky to process economically.
The stone cabin, built in 1893 by the Mendenhall brothers to wait out the winter while their father went to secure specialized mining equipment, still stands. Accounts vary, but the long-awaited equipment was either irreparably damaged in shipment or washed away after only a few days of use, and the gold claim was abandoned in the spring of 1894.
The five Native American Tribes who proposed Bears Ears #nationalmonument in 2015 asked for the cabin and the bend to be included in the monument, but it was not inside President Obama's 2016 monument designation - that boundary runs a few miles north of this site. @RepRubenGallego's H.R. 4518 and @SenatorTomUdall's S. 2354 would protect the boundary the Tribes proposed, including Mendenhall Loop and the cabin. This site is the first of the San Juan River's famed #goosenecks, and the cabin is exactly the kind of historic site the #AntiquitiesAct was designed to protect inside national monuments.
Call your Members of Congress today, and let them know you support H.R. 4518 and S. 2354 to restore and expand Bears Ears National Monument!

The Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument on the California-Oregon border protects crucial fish and wildlife habitat and offers excellent angling opportunities, including the chance to catch fish like the rare Jenny Creek redband trout. That’s why anglers on both sides of the state line are speaking up in defense of this threatened place -- in fact, 56 sportsmen’s organizations and businesses from California and Oregon signed onto a letter last year opposing the proposed downsizing of the CSNM. A new piece in the Salem Statesman-Journal from TU’s Blueback Chapter in Corvallis explains why Cascade-Siskiyou is such an important place, and why anglers want to keep it intact -- you can find the piece on our Facebook page (link in bio). This. “Public lands. One of the most uniquely American legacies that we share across all the potential lines of division across the country. The open space may be in Montana or Utah or somewhere distant to where you live but it’s open to anyone who shows up, no matter race, religion, politics, whatever. But we are in this really odd era where a minority-opinion is suddenly making massive moves to sell off and privatize our public lands for political gain and profit and lying about it as they do so. Surveys show most all Americans support public lands, and more and more people are using them, but they are continually defunded and now being sold off. We’ve got to stop the trend. Parks and forest deserve better funding (which are pennies on the dollar compared to other budget matters) and fees need to be reduced instead of increased. (Canada recently abolished all park fees.) Public Lands for the Public.
Write, call, show up and tell all your representatives that you want and demand more support for public lands. This legacy isn’t made for private profit... its intended for us all, and for generations to come.”—Kudos to BHA supporter and #PublicLandOwner @blackcoffee.mt for this awesome post 👌

What is Bears Ears National Monument, and why does it matter? For the first time ever, the Antiquities Act has been used in reverse, reducing the land size of Bears Ears by 85% and Grand Staircase by 50%. We believe this is an abuse of power, only Congress should be allowed to shrink public lands.

Why are we here? To raise money for legal fees and awareness for conservation groups fighting to maintain the sanctity of the Antiquities Act. We are fighting to maintain Teddy’s legacy. We are fighting for what is right.

Ever dime from this campaign is going directly to the people and groups on the front line. This is an issue that can’t be ignored. The future of preservation relies on the outcome of this case. •

National Monuments are being threatened, so stand with Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante to protect them from mining, drilling, and other land destruction. •

A Chacoan Great House, #Utah

This important cultural site affiliated with the Chaco Culture (in the lower left of the photo) was protected by #BearsEarsNationalMonument in 2016, note the circular kiva depressions. It has ancient and perfectly straight roads leading to and from it, and is in a beautiful spot with a great view of the surrounding landscape.
It's so monumental and special that there's no way President Trump would have removed #nationalmonument protection from it and the surrounding Chacoan roads, right? Well, no, it was removed from Trump's shrunken monuments in December 2017.  #monumentalmistake

@USInterior Secretary Ryan Zinke's 2017 national monuments review process was so rushed and careless that when Trump acted on it, he removed protections for this site, two other known Chaocan great houses, and miles and miles of ancient ceremonial roads that were previously protected, along with tens of thousands of other important sites that make up the remarkable #BearsEars cultural landscape.
These sites have fascinating and careful solar and lunar alignments made by #AncestralPuebloans that are only now being "discovered" and documented by science, but that were already well-known by Indigenous people that today inhabit Hopi, Zuni, Acoma, Jemez, and the Rio Grande Pueblos. Southeast Utah is in the far northwestern reach of influence centered at #ChacoCultureNationalHistoricPark in New Mexico, which like Bears Ears was also first protected using the #AntiquitiesAct.

A Chacoan Great House, #Utah 📷: @timmydp

The Chacoan story is just one of dozens of Native traditions held at Bears Ears whose story remains largely untold, and now, is at risk of irreparable damage.

Spring is springing...sort of...

"We have fallen heirs to the most glorious heritage a people ever received, and each must do his part if we wish to show that the nation is worthy of its good fortune."
~Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt is known as the "conservation president." •

Roosevelt signed the Antiquities Act in 1906, which gives the President the right to declare National Monuments. The Antiquities Act does not specifically give the President the right to cut or eliminate National Monuments like (the former) Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante, which were gutted in December with President Trump's Proclamations 9558 and 9682. Because it's unclear whether these proclamations are actually legal, lawsuits are underway. In the interim, the process of opening these areas to drilling and mining is underway and moving quickly.

As President, Roosevelt created many National Monuments: Devil's Tower, El Morro, Montezuma Castle, Petrified Forest, Chaco Canyon, Lassen Peak, Cinder Cone, Gila Cliff Dwellings, Tonto, Muir Woods, Grand Canyon, Pinnacles, Jewel Cave, Natural Bridges, Lewis & Clark Caverns, Tumacacori, Wheeler, and Mount Olympus.

This former Coastie (@mattkearnswv) loves the water. My small packraft provides a unique opportunity to enjoy our public lands and waters. I took a float down the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park and enjoyed the fresh perspective on this classic landscape. I'm glad that places like this have been protected using the Antiquities Act (Jackson Hole National Monument). As a veteran, I feel our public lands are at the core of what it means to have freedom. #MonumentsForAll

Betsy spelling it out right here! Keep your greedy hands off my land... @betsy.arthur
The Breaks is near the start of the Missouri River, in Montana. It's spectacular! There are stunning cliffs and big skies, and the eastern portion of the monument draws serious backcountry hunters.

What's a place like this worth?

$2/acre. That's the minimum bid to lease our #publicland for oil & gas wells. Flip to the third picture, and the asterisk shows where an oil & gas lease sold for that starting bid. It's just outside the National Monument Boundary, on the border. These pictures are further west, where the Monument land is a narrower ribbon along the river.

This lease is an example, one of many, of how our public lands are being pushed into oil, gas, and mining development. It's happening at a frantic, haphazard pace, including in areas that rely on outdoor recreation for the local economy.

When coal mines or gas wells are built, hikers, hunters, anglers, climbers, motorbikers, mountain bikers, and #vanlifers stop visiting. And the land is changed forever.

...and yes, the Missouri River starts in Montana. Who would've thought?

Postcards of these two pics coming soon-ish. #thebreaks

Let's work together, outdoorsy friends. It's an important time for caring about #conservation, time to overlook differences in exactly how we love the land in order to #keepitpublic.

Public land conservation is #bipartisan. The majority of Americans and the majority of Montanans support protecting public lands from extractive industries. As always, our Congress members care about what we care about. The US Capitol Switchboard will connect you to your Senators' and Representative's offices: 202.224.3122. And I'd love to connect, maybe send a few stickers your way if you message me.

As a veteran I (@mattkearnswv) used part of my GI Bill and took a course in expedition leadership and wilderness medicine to improve my outdoor skills. As part of the course I spent three weeks backpacking in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Our public lands classroom included twisting slot canyons, spring cactus blooms, and inky night skies. The lessons and memories from this special place will last a lifetime. #MonumentsForAll #SaveGrandStaircase

A fun weekend of dog and canyons and carrying dog through canyons.

I (@mattkearnswv) road tripped across the country back to West Virginia after I got out of the Coast Guard. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is quiet and laid back, a hidden gem compared to the bustle on the South Rim. This shot was taken on a short hike from one of my all-time favorite campsites on public land. My tent was perched near the edge of the canyon rim, with a drop off of a few hundred feet just steps away. Teddy Roosevelt was right: "Leave it as it is. You cannot improve on it." #MonumentsForAll

Deep inside Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, previously a national monument, there are still mountains that have never been climbed. I (@mattkearnswv) was part of a team that nabbed a "first ascent" of a peak so remote it had no name, only a number indicating its elevation. One of my teammates had a son that also served in the Coast Guard. We flew in and out of the park on a plane equipped with skis to land on the snow and glaciers. What an adventure! #MonumentsForAll

Can you spare a few minutes to speak up for #bearsears? The Bureau of Land Management is plowing ahead to create monument plans for the sliced and diced units. You have until April 11 to submit your comments. Don't know what to write? We've got you covered (link in bio). This week @mattkearnswv will be sharing his #MonumentsForAll stories with us!
.
.
My name is Matt Kearns and I'm a veteran from West Virginia. When I was in the Coast Guard serving on a ship homeported in Washington State, Olympic National Park was out my back door. I'd come home from a deployment and hit the trail as often as I could before leaving again. Royal Basin is one of my favorite places in this former national monument.

Okay, back to Bears Ears. Things are getting especially real now.

Did you all see the thing about uranium mines and mining company representatives "helping write" (writing) the Executive Order that downsized Bears Ears by 85%? The new monument borders leave potential mine sites--which also include petroglyph and archaeology sites--free and clear for development. "Development" sounds much less offensive than "new uranium mines." Remember, uranium has some toxicity associated...

IMHO, the canyons and mesas of Bears Ears are some of the most spectacular places in the whole world. •

Please, let's remind DOI (Department of the Interior, which oversees everything Bears Ears-related) that Bears Ears has huge public support for conservation and recreation rather than mining and drilling. We can also ask Congress to double-check Interior's decision-making on this. Remember, 98% of 3 million(!!!) public comments supported Bears Ears, so uranium mines hardly represent the public voice. •

It's easy to share your opinion with DOI and Congress. DOI is legally required to listen, and Senators & Representatives do really want to hear from their constituents.

Check out the last few pics on this post for hints on how to comment directly to DOI on the future of Bears Ears. Reaching Congress is easier--the US Capitol Switchboard will connect you to members' offices: 202.224.3121.

Thanks to the Antiquities act of 1906, Gregory Houska @flysmart_media took full advantage of this fine desert trout stream."⠀
