Some mornings, you just need a doughnut. Sometimes, you need more than one. And sometimes, an eggs Benedict doughnut will fill just the spot.
Sidecar is an excellent shop with some great tasting coffee and even better tasting doughnuts. This Benedict is only available until they run out, so you'll certainly want to come early enough to get one. That doughnut? Mixed with a perfectly poached eggs on the inside? It can't get any better than that. Add in some ham and their house made basil Benedict, this one's a winner for sure. I only wish I had gotten two!
This is our last film from the MCU that we are reviewing before #AvengersInfinityWar screening tonight. The other MCU films have previously been reviewed by both of us previously, so check them out. Anyway, Doctor Strange acts like a bad trip - a beautiful fascinating visual spectacle but a groggy and diluted narrative that runs short of an absorbing experience.
Benedict Cumberbatch leads this film playing Dr. Stephen Strange and does a fine job with his portrayal of the character but thin character writing doesn’t allow much room for Cumberbatch to do much in this film. There are a lot of story elements that aren’t given enough elaboration to be fully understood, such as Dr Strange becoming one of the most powerful within the mystic arts in a short span of time or the overwhelming amount of students learning the mystic arts but don’t show up at all during the final act. The humour is some of the worst we have come across in the MCU as they literally made us clench up due to how out of the character some of the lines were (“Try me, beyonce”). Beyond the breathtaking visual aspects of the film lies a weakly written script that is very confined by the MCU standards. The villain situation is a bit jumbled but Dormammu is meant to be an exceptionally powerful being in the Marvel world and Doctor Strange took him out fairly easily. Preferably, we would of preferred Mads Mikkelsen ‘Kaecilius’ get the prime focus as the antagonist, purely because Mikkelsen provided the best performance in the film.
The technical side of this film is outstanding with the visual effects and very creative in the magic it presents, whilst it is repetitive the visual quality of the film seems to be the most prominent element discussed. The use of CGI is utilized incredibly well with arguably the best in the MCU and it does create for some interesting action sequences. The score composed by Michael Giacchino lacks any noticable theme or unique sound which dampens the experience considering the concepts the film, it should of had the use of a great score.
