Rising up early to hear a melodious birdsong whilst sipping a delicious cup of coffee (or tea) is the best way to welcome summer solstice, don't you think?
Pronounced djuh-koo-ta, gökotta is one of many foreign-language nature words with no real equivalent in English.
Just as people take advantage of the longest day of the year, so do birds. They spend the extra hours of daylight foraging for food for their hungry nestlings. It's no mean task though given the declining insect population. A recent study confirmed a plunge in cuckoo numbers due to declines in tiger moth caterpillars, which cuckoos mainly feed on.
And it's not just cuckoos, ornithologists believe several bird species face starvation, and in fact, Britain's farmland birds have more than halved in number since 1970! There'd be a day, not so far away, when one would have to travel miles and miles to distant lands only to hear a bird sing.
Until then, make the most of the great outdoors, and welcome the astronomical summer with positivity and panache.
