The old town of Massawa in #Eritrea. Strolling through town, you can see how gorgeous it used to be, but a lot of it got destroyed during the Eritrean War of Independence from Ethiopia. The Battle of Massawa was very brutal. Ethiopians had napalm bombs from Israel that they used to bomb civilians and the city.
Some of the Massawan coral buildings are still standing, but a gorgeous Turkish bank got bombed and mostly destroyed. There are still people living in the old town.
Africa is full of hidden gems and Lalibela is a medieval city in the heart of Ethiopia. The churches, carved out of rock, are protected by UNESCO and were originally built by King Laibela who tried creating a “New Jerusalem” in the 12th century. According to Ethiopian Orthodox legend, angels and men worked together to carve the church out of the rock, with men building during the day and angels by night. Amazing!!! #africa#Ethiopia#travel#myth#explore#adventour
So last month one of my poems ‘If Africa Was A Home’ was published in Ethiopia’s What’s Out Addis Magazine May 2018 Issue || Here’s to celebrating little successes & pushing yourself || “Life is short, and it’s up to you to make it sweet.” – Sadie Delany
The Sketish Desert 100km southeast of Alexandria is a valley in Egypt. It has been a center of monasticism in the Orthodox world since the beginning of Christianity. In the Middle Ages, the valley became the center of Oriental Orthodoxy with Abyssinian, Armenian, Coptic and Syriac Orthodox monasteries.
The monks gathered for the feast days of monk fathers and whenever a patriarch was visiting. To pray together, they have written this manuscript of the Psalms book in Ge'ez (ancient Ethiopian), Syriac, Coptic, Arabic and Armenian.
In just 36 hours being in the ancient city of Harar, here are just a few of the people I met and interacted with, most whom asked me to take their photo. This is a city with so much history, character, and charm - one of those cities where nearly everything you see is fascinating - but it's the people I'll never forget. #Ethiopia#photography#travel
This time of year is our favourite, not just because of the sunshine but more importantly because it’s time for fresh, bright and lively Ethiopians! Ethiopia coffee harvest is just gone by so making the next three months extra exciting! @heartroasters have done a superb job with this one. $19.5 a bag to take home and is an absolute bargain.
Espressos of this wonderful coffee are on the menu from today onwards.
Today we went to a 100% vegan restaurant right by Edna Mall Couldn’t go on a trip to Ethiopia without trying Injera which is essentially a massive savoury pancake with a load of different sauces made of different veggies, pulses, and spices If you’re ever in Addis seriously check out The Loving Hut
