2015 @gcmarathon #7
You've read the book "Where's Wally?". Well if you were at the GCM15 then chances are you would have found him. Dressed as Wally I was there to show everyone that running can be fun. And it definitely was!
The previous 5 days I had run 5 half marathons.
I started in Zone A. My target time was sub 4hrs. When the gun went off I kept to the left running along the barrier so the spectators could see me (or should I say "find" me). It was great. I lost count how many times I heard someone say "Found you!", "There he is!", "Mum, Dad, look! There's Wally!". And the cheers from the crowd were incredible. They were always louder when I ran past. I had people purposely running with me because they enjoyed the cheers so much and it helped push them along.
My mate Kelvin had passed me earlier in the run however later in the race I caught up to him. He said he didn't have to look behind him to know that I was coming, he could just hear all the cheers for Wally getting louder and louder. A little side note: Kelvin will be running his 16th GC Marathon this year. Congrats mate.
I also met @sophcurnow on course. She was filming a short video for Asics which I managed to get a small feature in. Check it out ->
https://youtu.be/mBbHnypLdqs Her goal time was 3:30 and she achieved it with a time of 3:26:55
I got plenty of High 5's. I actually counted them. The exact number escapes me, somewhere close to 1000! I reckon I'd have a good chance in the Guiness Book of World Records for most High 5's in a marathon. My arm muscles got a bit of a workout and the next day they hurt more than my leg muscles.
Here's the best part - that feeling you get when you're running along and then on the sideline you see Mum & Dad cheering you on and suddenly the adrenalin kicks in and you're able to pick the speed up with ease and zoom past them? Well I had that feeling every time someone yelled out Wally so it felt like I ran the whole race on adrenalin. As a result I ran much faster than planned.
My goal time was 4hrs. I did it in 3:29:00 (my second fastest GC Marathon time), dressed as Wally wearing long pants, long sleeve shirt and a beanie!
