Loulou knew Nan Kempner (1930-2005) socially; as a fanatically, breathlessly loyal Saint Laurent couture client; and as a patron of her own boutique in the aughts. Like everything Yves did for Nan, the 1983 silk faille “domino” she wears here, on the town with John Richardson, was made on a custom dummy that followed the exact slope of her shoulders, the precise spread of her hips. Slide 2: Nan and Bettina Graziani at a 1975 showing. Slide 3: Nan’s bill. Amazing to think that in 1974 you could get a Saint Laurent dress, made on you, no less, for 5,000 francs. Note Hélène Rochas’s bill directly below. Slide 4: The work sheet for one of Nan’s orders. Slide 5: At a showing in 1964, the year of her first Saint Laurent.
