Capitals defeat the Senators in Ottawa! Great way to start the season and an exciting win as the Caps offense broke out for 5 goals. The Senators started the scoring out with a goal 6 minutes in to go up 1-0. This was quickly followed up by a goal from Brett Connolly to tie it at 1. The game went into the second period at a 1-1 score, then in the second, the Senators re-took the lead on a snap shot goal to make it 2-1. The Caps offense was unable to generate a goal in the second period and the score remained 2-1 into the third. The third period was crazy as the Caps erased a two goal deficit to tie it up. The Senators went up 3-1 after a quick third period goal, then the Caps evened it up with two goals from Alex Ovechkin, making it a 3-3 score. Ottawa would again re-take the lead on a goal with 13 minutes left, making it 4-3. Alex Ovechkin would respond once again as he notched a hat trick on a wrist shot to tie the game at 4. The game went into overtime where both goalies held the score at 4-4. Finally, in the shootout, the Caps were able to edge out the Senators 2-1 to get the 5-4 victory, beginning the season at 1-0-0 with 2 points. Braden Holtby struggled a bit in his 2017-18 debut, only saving 28 of 32 shots for an .875 save percentage. Evgeny Kuznetsov also had a big night with 3 assists in the win.
