Grevy's zebra
#3 of 9 Animal Abstracts Project
.
Entering into the 20th century there were tens of thousands of Grevy's zebras living free across the semiarid scrublands and plains of Northeastern Africa. Today their numbers are estimated around 2000. Their loss can be averted so long as we act now with a comprehensive conservation plan.
.
This image is one of nine from my Animal Abstracts project to benefit the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. All proceeds from this project are being directed to Ol Pejeta to help them with their conservation and education efforts. Ol Pejeta is current home to the last two remaining Northern White rhinoceroses as well as other threatened species.
.
Lets end extinction!

Polar bear (Ursus maritimus)
#2 of 9 Animal Abstracts Project
.
Striving to image a familiar subject in a new way to focus attention on its inherent beauty. Like the rhino, these charismatic bears of the North are also under threat. Their primary threat is not due to hunting, but rather due to the effects of global climate change. Their story is none the less important as we must take extinction threats head on in multiple directions. .
This image is one of nine from my Animal Abstracts project to benefit the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. All proceeds from this project are being directed to Ol Pejeta to help them with their conservation and education efforts.

Photo by @amivitale With a heavy heart, I share this news and hope that Sudan's legacy will awaken us to protect this magnificent and fragile planet. Yesterday, Joseph Wachira, 26 comforted Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino moments before he passed away. Sudan lived a long, healthy life at the conservancy after he was brought to Kenya from @safari_park_dvur_kralov in the #czechrepublic in 2009. He died surrounded by people who loved him at @olpejeta after suffering from age-related complications that led to degenerative changes in muscles and bones combined with extensive skin wounds. Sudan has been an inspirational figure for many across the world. Thousands have trooped to Ol Pejeta to see him and he has helped raise awareness for rhino conservation. The two female northern white rhinos left on the planet are his direct descendants. Research into new Assisted Reproductive Techniques for large mammals is underway due to him. The impact that this special animal has had on conservation is simply incredible. And there is still hope in the future that the subspecies might be restored through IVF.
In 2009, I had the privilege of following this gentle hulking creature on his journey from the snowy Dour Krylov zoo in the Czech Republic to the warm plains of Kenya, when he was transported with three of his fellow Northern White Rhinos in a last ditch effort to save the subspecies. It was believed that the air, water, and food, not to mention room to roam, might stimulate them to breed and the offspring would then be used to repopulate Africa. At the time, there were 8 Northern white rhinos alive, all in zoos. Today, we are witnessing the extinction of a species that had survived for millions of years but could not survive mankind.

Black rhino (Diceros bicornis)
#1 of 9 Animal Abstracts Project
.
The smaller of the two African species, the black rhinoceros is critically endangered. This up close and personal view of its skin serves testament, for me, that we will suffer a great loss if these animals are lost. This image is the one that helped start my Animal Abstracts project. All of the proceeds from this project are being donated to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

Save white rhinos💖 happy #earthday 🌎

#RepostSave @natgeo with @repostsaveapp ・・・ Photo by @amivitale. Najin relaxes with a flock of oxpecker on her back. The oxpecker rest on the back of rhino, ridding them of pests like ticks, flies and other bugs and give off loud warning hisses when they see danger, providing a kind of alarm system, while also taking little sips of blood from the large mammal.

Najin is the daughter of Sudan, the last male white rhino who passed away on Mar. 19, and the mother of Fatu. Najin and Fatu are the last northern white rhino in all the world. Along with Sudan, they were transported from the Dvůr Králové Zoo (@safari_park_dvur_Kralove) in the Czech Republic to Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta) in Kenya’s plains in a last ditch effort to encourage them to breed and save the species. The air, water, and food, not to mention room to roam, might stimulate them to breed—and the offspring would then be used to repopulate Africa. At the time there were eight northern white rhino in the world. Now there are two.
Yet all hope is not lost. Scientists believe they can bring the species back from the brink of extinction using IVF and stem cell science and are working toward that end. Whether science can save the species is unknown but my hope is that Sudan's legacy can be a HUGE wake up call for all of us. We can all make impacts in our own small ways for a world of co existence.

Annika @girlwiththefionatatoo has been telling me about the many beautiful animals that will be extinct in less than 20 years: Black Jaguars, Scarlett Macaws, and Rhinos 🦏to name just a few. I hope this new generation will find ways to save what we’ve killed off in just 3 generations. 🙏🏼😢🌏
.
.
Under the advice from Annika, our family made an official Earth 🌏 Day commitment. We switched to metal straws, bought Silicone reusable/washable plastics bags, and are figuring out how to compost!♻️ Every little change helps.❤️ .

Also, wanted to share about Sudan’s sad legacy as the last male Northern White Rhino on earth.

The earth 🌏 has been crying along w us. Just as our skin speaks to us about distress in uproars and Inflammation, so does the earth. The crazy weather changes and flooding, dry lands crumbling and burning, and the massive extinction of so many rare and beautiful animals, are all voices screaming for us to be accountable. Let us all be committed and courageous in our mission to heal our earth. In this journey, I’m sure we will heal ourselves as well.

The plight of wildlife and the conflict between poachers and increasingly militarized rangers has received much-needed attention. But very little has been said about the indigenous communities on the front lines of the poaching wars, and the incredible work being done to strengthen them. We often forget that the best protectors of these landscapes are the local communities. Their efforts are ultimately the best immunization against forces that threaten both their wildlife and way of life. Photo by @amivitale. Jan Stejskal from Dvur Kralove Zoo (@safari_park_dvur_Kralove) comforts Sudan as he takes his last breath. Moments before he died, Sudan was surrounded by love, together with the people who committed their lives to protecting him and giving him the good life he enjoyed. There were the directors and people from the Dvůr Králové Zoo, staffers and his six dedicated keepers from Ol Pejeta, who spent more time with him than their own children. Veterinarians and other people from Kenya Wildlife Services were present as well. Most of them had been crying for days. The sky opened up. Rain poured down and he perked up for a moment. When he died, it was silent except for one little go-away-bird chirping ‘go away, go away, go away.’ Poaching is not slowing down. It’s entirely possible, even likely, that if the killing continues, these rhinos—along with elephants and a host of lesser known plains animals—will be functionally extinct in our lifetime. I only hope that this will be a wake-up call. We can often forget that the best protectors of these landscapes are the local communities themselves. Their efforts to preserve community cohesion is ultimately the best immunization against forces that threaten both their wildlife and way of life.

I have launched a print sale of the last of the northern white rhinos with 100% of the proceeds going to @olpejeta so that they can continue on their mission of protecting and fighting for some of the world's most vulnerable creatures. Since the passing of Sudan, Fatu and her mother Najin are the last remaining members of her species.
My hope is that Sudan’s legacy serves as a catalyst to awaken humanity to this reality.

Rhino Sudan, 45 , died last month after suffering from degenerative muscle and bone condition linked to age.

He is survived by the last two females of his species, daughter Najn , 27 , and 17 year old granddaughter.

Sudan's death led Kenya to declare that anyone caught possessing ivory should be sentenced to life in prison.

In 1960 there were more than 2000 nothern white rhino in the wild. Due to extensive poaching there were only 22 left by 2004.

By 2006 the last four of the species in the wild were thought to have been killed by poachers and they were considered to be extinct in the wild by 2008.

Shortly after that, the three rhinos ( including Sudan) we're shipped from a Czech zoo to Kenya as part of the last attempt to revive the species.

Now the hope is gone, and the last chance saloon is an expensive artificial breeding process.

All hope is not lost through

His genetic materials was collected and provieds a hope for future attempts at reproduction of nothern white rhinos through advanced cellular technologies.

The future of the rhino now lies in developing in vitro fertilization techniques using eggs from two remaining females, stored nothern white rhino semen from males and surrogate southern white rhino females.

Today, we are witnessing the extinction of a species that had survived for millions of years but could not survive mankind.

Video by @amivitale Elephants enjoy a mud bath at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e). These elephants are being cared for by members of the local community. “We take care of the elephants, and the elephants are taking care of us. We now have a relationship between us.” In the wake of Sudan's death, I remain hopeful because of places like this where communities are coming together to protect what is left.
I have launched a print sale of the last of the northern white rhinos with 100% of the proceeds going to @olpejeta so that they can continue on their mission of protecting and fighting for some of the world's most vulnerable creatures. Visit the link in my profile to learn more and purchase a print. We must see ourselves as part of the landscape. Regrann from @natgeo - Photo by @amivitale.

Meet Najin (Mother) and Fatu (daughter) the last two surviving Northern white rhino females along with Tawu southern white rhino. Both were brought from Czech Republic where they were kept in Zoo to Ol Pejeta, a native habitat for the animals enriched with favourable climate and rich grasslands especially for rhinos. I met them and they were very friendly, just enjoying their morning carrots. Ol Pejeta conservancy is doing an amazing work & has a natural habitat for many animals & birds, all living as a one big family. A must see safari ! #olpejeta #olpejetarhinos #northernwhiterhinos #africa #kenya #laikipia #safari #africansafari #travel #love #fun #katochclick #instagood #instagram #natgeo #discovery #animals #rhino #nature #photography #nikon #instatravel

I am so grateful to be working with @amivitale is she launched a print sale to raise money for @olpejeta conservancy as they provide care for the last two female remaining Northern White Rhinos on earth. Ami recently travelled to Ol Pejeta to say goodbye to Sudan, our world's last male Northern White Rhino with whom she has been photographing for years. Ami's commitment to the care and welfare for animals in the wild fills me with inspiration. Her life's purpose seems to revolve around improving the lives of these animals and the communities that care for them. 100% of the print proceeds that come from her print sale will go directly to #olpejetaconservancy and the care of these amazing animals. Go to her Instagram feed to donate and receive a beautiful image as well. #amivitale #sudanforever #olpejetarhinos #worthmorealive #protectehinos #kenya #africa #everydayafrica #stoppoaching

Fatu is the granddaughter of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino on the planet who passed away on March 19th due to age related complications.

We must see ourselves as part of the landscape. Our fate is linked to the fate of animals. “Humanity has brought the northern white rhino to the edge of extinction because it has slaughtered the animal for its horn,” said project scientist Jan Stejskal, a conservation researcher based at (@safari_park_dvur_Kralove) Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic. “We have a duty to try to save it, no matter how hard that is going to be.” Scientists believe they can bring the species back from the brink of extinction using IVF and stem cell science. The IVF plan involves creating embryos and implanting them in surrogate mothers from a closely related sub-species, the southern white rhino, which is not endangered.
Whether science can save the species is unknown but my hope is that Sudan's legacy can be a HUGE wake up call for all of us. We can all make impacts in our own small ways for a world of co existence.

Fatu is one of only two northern white rhinos alive on the planet, following the death of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino who died due to age related complications on March 19th at Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta ) in Kenya. Fatu and her mother Najin are the two last of the northern white rhinos remaining in the world and may hold the keys to saving the entire species.

Sudan’s death could mean the extinction of his species, though scientists are considering other options involving Fatu and Najin, including stem cell procedures and harvesting eggs. If there is meaning in Sudan’s passing, it’s that all hope is not lost. This can be our wake-up call. In a world of more than 7 billion people, we must see ourselves as part of the landscape.
