Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is a colourless solid originally developed as an insecticide, and ultimately becoming infamous for its environmental impacts. DDT was one of the first chemicals in widespread use as a pesticide, and from 1950 to 1980, DDT was extensively used in agriculture, especially in the United States. However, the widespread use of DDT in agriculture was subsequently found to cause cancer and other serious health effects in wildlife, particularly birds. This led to massive public outcry that eventually led to the ban on the use of DDT in the United States. Interestingly, the United States ban on DDT is a major factor in the comeback of the bald eagle and the peregine falcon, both of which were critically endangered due to DDT.
