All over the world, including the U.S., animals that were deliberately bred into existence for exploitation and slaughter are being "culled" earlier than scheduled. This is because #drought makes the wildly disproportionate resource inputs of animal farming even more of a wasteful extravagance, to the point of impossibility.
Each steer, cow, etc. has the daily caloric and #water requirements of several human beings. Between the water used to irrigate their feed or pasture, drinking water, and sanitation water (including cleaning up the bloody mess after slaughtering them), "beef" production is one of the most water-intensive undertakings on the planet. It also uses nearly 60% of the world’s agricultural land but only accounts for less than 2% of calories and 5% of protein consumed worldwide (Union of Concerned Scientists). Additionally, #cattle #ranching is the #1 driver of Amazon #deforestation and a top driver of #climatechange, among many other worsening environmental catastrophes.
The general lack of scrutiny over why on Earth we continue to dedicate precious #publiclands and pour #subsidies and scarce resources into breeding, feeding, watering, and slaughtering bovines for a luxury food, one inexplicably treated as a staple in the West, is astounding.
That's not to say it's "better" to exploit any other species. #AnimalAgriculture is a reduction industry, no matter the animal, in that it dramatically reduces resources like land, crops, and water to cause artificial scarcity, and it entails deliberate exploitation and #slaughter, reducing individuals to commodities. Please opt out of animal exploitation as far as is practical and possible by embracing a #vegan ethic for the planet, and the inherent moral worth, we all share.
