Reviews of Tom Ford Oud Wood Intense, and Tobacco Oud Intense
Oud Wood Intense: 4/10
(angelica roots, ginger, cypress, juniper, oud wood, castoreum)
I remember seeing the announcement for this one just a week ago, and becoming ecstatic: Tom Ford was releasing an intensified version of my favorite fragrance of his, Oud Wood! But sadly, this ended up being a letdown. Gone is the mysterious, smoky sweetness of Oud Wood. Here to stay is a marginally more natural Oud note, with a long, deep dive in a vat of muddled animal notes and gasoline. As I write this, I’m planning next to clean this one off of my wrist, so that I can stop gagging. Skip this one, and grab the original Oud Wood.
Tobacco Oud Intense 6/10
(coriander, tobacco, oud, labdanum, amber, sandalwood, cedar, tonka bean, castoreum and patchouli)
I must begin by saying that I’m simply not a fan of most spicy fragrances…I’ve yet to meet a spiciness that doesn’t bring the Viktor and Rolf abomination, “Spice Bomb” to mind. So with that taken into consideration, add a point to the score if you enjoy that sort of spiciness…take the score as-is otherwise. What’s to like about Tobacco Oud Intense is the opening salvo that is perfectly reminiscent of the runaway hit, Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille; it has been perfectly recreated in the top notes of this fragrance. What lies beneath, however, is more of gag-inducing mixture that Oud Wood Intense is comprised of. The spiciness of the top notes warp it, and makes it more tolerable, but if you really let your nose work at it, you can pick out all of the suspect notes from TF’s other new Oud fragrance. There was an opportunity here to mix the delicious aura of the original Oud Wood, with Tobacco Vanille, but sadly “Intense” had to bring with it the newer oud, rather than the original. Rather than buying this one, I’d simply layer Tobacco Vanille over Oud Wood, and skip the “Intense” nastiness.
