from @timlaman - Photo by @TimLaman. A Tapanuli Orangutan male threatens another orangutan in the mountains of Sumatra. When I made this image in 2014 on assignment for @NatGeo, I didn’t know this isolated population was going to be described as a new species of orangutan, Pongo tapanuliensis! It is amazing that in 2017, we are still making new discoveries about the great apes, our closest relatives. But really, there is so much more to learn. For example, our short film called “Person-of-the-Forest” which I co-directed with @MelissaLesh, reveals some of the new findings about culture in orangutans – knowledge that is passed on from mother to offspring, and friend to friend. And if you happen to be in New York City this week, you can catch the New York premier of the film at the DOCNYC film festival where it is a featured selection. See link in my bio to watch the trailer and get the details to the opening this evening Nov 15th, where you can meet Melissa, and team members @tbfrost and @rrsuro.
