After the selected Trae Young and Kevin Huerter, the duo was almost immediately compared to Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. Albeit, the parallels are more about role and style of play rather than talent level. The Splash Bros are future Hall of Famers and the Hawks would be thrilled to see any semblance of that type of success from Young and Huerter in the next five to ten years. Nonetheless, I thought it would be interesting to look back at the draft grades and analysis of the Warriors’ selections of Curry and Thompson when they were selected nine and seven years ago to see how they were viewed, in comparison to how Young and Huerter are viewed right now.
In terms of the Trae Young/Steph Curry parallel, in 2009 the Steph Curry pick was viewed in a much more positive light than the Young pick. As most analysts had less questions about how Curry’s game will translate in the NBA.
To me the Kevin Huerter/Klay Thompson parallel was much more striking. I’ve been hesitant to compare Huerter to Thompson, mostly because I don’t think his defense will ever be as good, but as it turns out analyst had similar question marks about Thompson’s defense. Much like Huerter, Klay Thompson was not a good defender coming out of college but he had all tools to improve. As we all know, Klay Thompson went on to become one of the better defensive players in the league.
Many people have claimed that Trae Young and Kevin Huerter are the “Bootleg” Splash Bros, but after reading these scouting reports, Young and Huerter might have more in common with the 3-time champs than people think. #TraeYoung #KevinHuerter
