Brushing your dog's teeth regularly prevents plaque, which causes bacteria to grow in the dog's mouth. The danger is in that bacteria being swallowed and entering the blood stream, which adhears to the walls of the arteries. Dogs that get diagnosed with periodontal disease are often diagnosed with heart disease at the same time. A few minutes brushing your dog's teeth each week, or even once a month, can add years to your dog's life!
