With just a few weeks to go before All Stars are announced, I went through the list of candidates on the Yankees roster to see what players have a chance to make the team. Of course, not all of these guys will make it, but it’s no surprise that the team with the best record in baseball has so many All Star caliber players on their team. -
Aaron Judge, Luis Severino and Aroldis Chapman will easily make this team. They’ve had amazing seasons and the only way they don’t make the team is if there’s an injury or they absolutely fall off a cliff. I don’t anticipate that the latter will come to fruition, but you never know with injuries.
The near locks:
Gleyber Torres has been the second best second baseman in baseball this year behind Altuve, and trails only him in votes at second base. As long as he keeps hitting at a solid clip, he’ll make this team. As for Gary, while he hasn’t had a very good season, his numbers are still significantly better than almost every catcher in the AL. Now, he might not get the start (although he’s a close second behind Wilson Ramos right now), but a hot stint will easily secure his spot.
On the fence candidates:
Dellin, Andújar and Chad Green are all guys that have had really good seasons, but are not locks to make the team. While Andújar is in second for voting at third base, there is some competition at the position in general. This includes Alex Bregman (HOU), Matt Chapman (OAK), Matt Duffy (TB) and Jose Ramirez (CLE, 1st in 3B voting). If Miguel doesn’t get in, it’ll probably be because of a semi-crowded position and the fact that the Yanks will already have a great deal of All Stars. Dellin I think might have the best chance of all three of these guys to make it. He has been in the midst of the best stretch of his career, and has a fifth straight ASG on the line. He has thrown 12 consecutive scoreless innings with 22 strikeouts and just 1 hit. He also has lowered his BB/9 to 3.55 and has an absurd K/9 of 16.36. If he continues this stretch he should make the team. Green has been consistently good all year long, but could use one last dominant stretch to make a push for the team. -
