The greatest soccer player to ever play at Hazelwood Central. Also pictured: Shane Battelle.
Lmao forreal tho, the story behind this one is crazy. In my senior year of high school (Hazelwood Central 2010), I had a homeroom with the teacher who handled making the yearbook. She had yearbooks dating back to the 1980s. When I wasn’t sleeping, I would skim through the old year books. I was most interested in the sports section. I was a soccer and baseball player at the time so I was pretty aware of what teams were historically good. One year that stuck out was 1989 and the boys soccer team. That was the only team to ever win state, which is a pretty big deal for a public school in the state of Missouri. They were lead by this kid Shane Battelle, who was All-Everything (Metro, State, American). Also Gatorade Player of the Year. I’m not sure if that’s State or National, either way. Brian McBride says he’s the best player to come out of St. Louis. .
Anyway, take it to January 2018, I’m scrolling through Facebook and I see the name Shane Battelle in the suggested friends list. “Oh shit, that’s that soccer player,” I think. I notice we have like 3 mutual friends. And even more weird, each of the mutual friends trains at @watson_martial_arts. Turns out we actually train together at the same martial arts academy. I introduce myself and tell Shane how I knew who he was. Being a couple of north county soccer dudes, now involved in martial arts, we hit it off and are friends right away.
Shane pretty much instantly showed support of my fight career, my collaboration with @midwestmuaythai, and my pursuits with my bigger brand @axis.314.
What I’m saying is, Shane is an #AxisOriginal through and through. He’s officially added to our team as a sponsored coach. No longer repping the Columbus Crew, Shane is now training players @player_development. A lot of problems arise simply from ignorance, so it’s important to us to help our teachers. Shit like that has a ripple effect, ya dig?
