🎡 Belgium's best family activities this summer - PART 3 - Water activities⠀

🏖️️ Although actual swimming is not on the agenda, Bruxelles-les-Bains @BLB_BB, near Place Sainctelette, is a great way to spend a day surrounded by golden sand, sports activities and water fountains. Free children’s activities on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons include traditional games, face painting, music, theatre, storytelling and art workshops. ⠀
And on-site organisation Brussels by Water offers 45-minute boat trips along the canal. ⠀

🎉 Other popular beach festivals include Louvain-la-Plage, with daily creative workshops, mini-car rides, bouncy castle and accrobranche (rope climbing trails), and La Louvière Plage.⠀

⛵️ Forget Oxford and Cambridge: Dinant’s International Bathtub Regatta along the Meuse is the real boat race, as the tranquil river morphs into a frantic scene every year on 15 August. Participants in the 1km race have their crafts and costumes rated for beauty, originality, representativeness of Dinant or how well they capture the theme (this year it’s ‘cinema’). Watching and participating in this human-powered – no electrics, it’s paddle or hand power only – race is completely free.⠀

🚣🏽‍♀️ Do you want to learn about other water activities you can do with kids in Belgium? Check out the link in bio!

🎡 Belgium's best family activities this summer - PART 2 - National Day and Storytelling⠀

🇧🇪 Boredom is impossible on 21 July, with activities in every major town. Brussels’ family attractions include the Royal Park’s sports festival and Place Poelaert’s simulated car rides and detective trails. Other highlights are the royal procession and fireworks display at 23.00. The city’s communes offer their own smaller scale entertainment, while Mons’ festivities include a special children’s programme at the Belfry Park.⠀

🎭 Chiny’s Festival du Conte in mid-July presents no fewer than 80 spectacles from nine countries in a gorgeous small town in Luxembourg province. Indoors and out, the French-language shows span all genres and ages. And it’s not just storytelling: the festival also boasts street theatre, children’s workshops and food stalls. ⠀

📚 Closer to home, and free, Brussels and Wallonia offer Lire dans les Parcs – a peaceful way to spend weekday afternoons as a family during the summer holidays. Librarians read (in French) to your children in local parks, or, if it rains, in the library. It’s aimed at four- to 10-year-olds, though all are welcome.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Belgium's best family activities this summer - PART 1 - Performance ⠀

🎡 From big-name events like the Gentse Feesten to one-day wonders like Dinant’s bathtub race, Belgium is overflowing with summer family festivals.⠀

🎭 Offering street theatre, comedy and circus in an idyllic village in Luxembourg province, Chassepierre’s international street art festival in August is the jewel in Belgium’s thespian crown. A one- or two-day pass gives you access to countless shows until midnight. In Flanders, the 10-day Gentse Feesten in July includes theatre, circus and puppet events (some of them free), with circus workshops at Baudelo Park. ⠀

🤡 Or visit the charming Parkkaffee festival in a bucolic lakeside setting at nearby Mariakirche in August. The daily event includes children’s circus activities on Wednesdays and Thursdays. In the capital, the Théâtres Nomades festival in the Royal Park at the end of August has an impressive line-up of street theatre, circus and storytelling, washed down with mint tea from Berber tents – and it’s all free. ⠀

🎪 In the same spot there’s Guignolet dans le Parc, free puppet shows from Wednesday to Sunday all summer. And Brussels’ Insifon puppet festival is scheduled for the last weekend in August.

🍟 Dutch chef Sergio Herman, start of Belgian TV food programmes and owner of the Michelin-star The Jane in Antwerp, plans to open one of his gourmet chips outlets in Brussels.⠀

🍟 Herman opened a Frites Atelier outlets in Antwerp last year, following three in the Netherlands. One is expected in downtown Ghent this summer. The Brussels location will follow sometime in the autumn.⠀

🍟 Unlike the average #friture, Frites Atelier @fritesatelieramsterdam has a sophisticated interior of hardwood and marble, and the fries are special, too. Customers can pick from homeade ketchup or mayonnaise or one of five special sauces – basil, truffle, andalouse, Thai and béarnaise. There are also gourmet toppings like Indo peanut sauce, Flemish stew and a fiery kimchi special.⠀

🍟 A pack of chips start at €3.50, while “pimped up” versions stretch to a hefty €8.50. Herman spent 18 months perfecting his fries before opening his first outlets, using #Zeeland potatoes baked in a blend of 100% natural oils before being fried and flavoured with samphire salt.⠀

☀️ It’s no secret this summer has been unusually hot and sunny so far. ⠀
Take advantage of it and head to Bruxelles les Bains @blb_bb, the city’s cracking urban beach. ⠀

🌴 Along both sides of the canal north of Sainctelette are bars, lounge chairs, sport, music and a wealth of other activities, along with soft beds of sand. ⠀

🎥 Weekends are a good time to catch a film on the outdoor screen and cool off with an ice cream or apertif. A bridge takes you from one side of the canal to another, and there are boat trips, too. ⠀

Take a gastronomic tour of the country, taste some seasonal specialities and look out for these gourmet events - PART 3⠀

🍗 You can’t travel a kilometre in Flanders without finding an official ‘regional product’. A list of these local specialities are maintained on a website streekproduct.be, and hunting them down is a great way to get to know new parts of the region through its tarts, biscuits, meats and drinks.⠀

🍺 Speaking of beer, one of the most famous brewing regions in the world is right on Brussels’ doorstep. Pajottenland is the only place that brews lambic, a beer in its own right and the base for both kriek and gueuze. Brewers expose the wort to the air so Pajottenland’s unique mix of wild yeasts and bacteria can aid the fermenting process. One of the most famous bars in the world – In de Verzekering Tegen de Grote Dorst (Insurance Against a Great Thirst) in Lennik – serves every lambic made, as well as most Belgian krieks and gueuzes.⠀

🎉 Believe it or not, one of the biggest parties on Flanders’s annual Community Day is in #Brussels. ⠀

📕 This is not only because Brussels is the capital of Flanders but because its Dutch speakers want to get in on the action. Celebrations every 11 July recognise the date of the Battle of the Golden Spurs, when ragtag hordes of Flemish farmers and craftsmen defeated the French cavalry near Kortrijk in 1302. ⠀

💃 But Brussels it's mostly about dancing. The popular Dance Battle @brusseldanstdancebattles on Place de la Monnaie features breakdance and Afro-Caribbean this year and is followed by DJs afterwards so you can show off your own moves. ⠀

🍹 Other Brussel Danst activities include a mock wedding (declare your love for Brussels!), concerts by Flemish bands and a late-night party at Beursschouwburg. ⠀

Take a gastronomic tour of the country, taste some seasonal specialities and look out for these gourmet events - PART 2.⠀

🌮 #Foodtruck festivals are the new black, with two roaming Flanders all summer and well into September: Hap and Kantien Royal. In the south, Wallonia’s own gourmet caravan will stop at Charleroi, Tournai, Ottignies, Arlon and Mons. ⠀

🍤 Should you find yourself on the coast this summer, don’t hesitate to indulge in those famous little grey shrimp. You’ll find them on several restaurant menus, notably in the form of stuffed tomatoes. #Mussels, of course, are also a great Belgian coast speciality, served with white wine, butter and garlic. Don’t forget to order the West Flemish Rodenbach beer to wash it all down. Some good addresses to get you going are De Kleine Garnaal (The Little Shrimp) in Ostend and Coupe de Nice in Knokke.⠀

🌓 Belgium may have missed out on the combined blue moon, blood moon and supermoon that captivated the world's media in January, but it is well-prepared for the next event: a full lunar eclipse on the night of 27-28 July.⠀

🌕 A lunar eclipse takes place when the sun, the earth and the moon line up in such a way that the moon lies entirely in the earth's shadow. When this happens, the only light to reach the moon's surface first passes through the earth's atmosphere. This sometimes makes the moon look red, hence the term "blood moon".⠀

🌗 There are between four and seven eclipses every year around the world. Solar eclipses, when the moon comes between the sun and the earth, are short-lived and only visible in a narrow band of locations. Lunar eclipses last longer and can be seen from a wider range of places, but even so Western Europe sometimes misses out.⠀

🌚 Another total lunar eclipse will visible in Belgium on 21 January 2019, but this is an unusually short gap. After that the wait for the next one is longer, until 16 May 2022, followed by 7 September 2025.

Take a gastronomic tour of the country, taste some seasonal specialities and look out for these gourmet events - PART 1⠀

🍦 If you’re going to eat ice-cream it may as well be artisan. Gaston in Brussels’ Quai aux Briques serves up scoops of the flavours of summer as well as classic and more intriguing varieties, like savoury and vegan - @glaciergaston

🍓 Nothing tastes more like summer than strawberries, and the sweetest berries in the land are the famed Fraises de Wepion. From Namur, drive along the river Meuse on Chaussée de Dinant and buy punnets directly from wooden chalets. It’s also a fine spot for an impromptu picnic – and don’t forget to drop in on the Strawberry Museum - @museedelafraise.⠀

🥗 Combine cruising with fine dining on a summer gourmet sailing along the Meuse in Liège. Embark in the ardent city at 20.00 and enjoy a gastronomic menu with musical entertainment until midnight. See website bateaulepaysdeliege.be for sailing dates.⠀

🔸 A pop-up lesbian bar in downtown Brussels which has closed after just two months was an "overwhelming success" and hopes to return in some other form.⠀

🔸 Mothers & Daughters @mothersanddaughtersalesbianbar had occupied a long-empty Greek restaurant on the Quai aux Briques next to Sainte-Catherine metro station since 3 May. The closing party was on Saturday night.⠀

🔸 "We knew there was a need for this kind of place," said Jessica Gysel, one of the volunteers behind the initiative. "The success was overwhelming. What was particularly striking was how mixed the public was - from young women in their 20s to 60-somethings."⠀

🔸 Mothers & Daughters had been organising pop-up events in @Beursschouwburg for the past year. The collective want to continue the project, but there are no concrete plans yet.⠀

🔸 "This was an experment, to see if it was feasible. Now we know that it is," Gysel added. "It has become something bigger than we had expected."⠀

🔸 The queer arts magazine Girls Like Us @girlslikeusmagazine was one of the names behind the bar, which was financed through public donations. The bar acted as a community space, organising workshops, discussions and exhibitions.

🌱 Manneken Pis pees green on the buses of the new line 33, which connects uptown to downtown sans noise and exhaust.⠀

🌱 A new bus line launched earlier this month that connects two of Brussels-City’s most crucial neighbourhoods – the upper and lower parts of downtown. Line 33 links Louise to Dansaert, via several key stops, including the Sablon, Grand’Place and Saint-Gery.⠀

🌱 It is a line that should prove particularly popular for tourists, shoppers and entertainment-seekers, coming within a few steps of Central Station, Manneken-Pis and Ancienne Belgique.⠀

🌱 If that sounds suspect because of the narrow streets involved and the proximity to the pedestrian zone, there’s a reason: The buses of line 33 were specifically manufactured in a smaller size to manoeuvre the tightest corners. And every single one of them is electric.⠀

Belgian beer exports way up on previous years 🍻

🍺 #Belgianbeer exports were up again last year, with 70% of production being sent out of the country. The biggest drinkers of Belgian beer are France, the United States and the Netherlands, respectively.⠀

🍺 Belgium’s 261 brewers produced nearly 16 million hectolitres of beer last year, 8.7% more than in 2016. The increase is all thanks to exports because domestic beer sales actually fell by 1.6%.⠀

🍺 Small brewers are still focused on breaking into new markets as there is a trend in the top three export countries towards making more beer themselves. In the US, for instance, many small brewers are producing what they call ‘Belgian-style ales’.⠀

🍺 Belgian brewers are looking in particular at China and other Asian markets, which have been more difficult to break into, but where potential sales are huge.

🛴 Electric scooter sharing now a thing in #Brussels.⠀

🛴 The app Troty lets you log in, find a scooter and get a code that will unlock it for use.⠀

🛴 Troty has been tested in Paris and is available in some US cities. Users can join for €1 and then pay €0.15 per minute. ⠀

🛴 As an example, you could pick up a scooter at Grand’Place and be in Parvis in about 12 minutes for €1.80. Of course, the faster you can go, the cheaper it is.⠀

🛴 Troty offers advice for those new to electric scooters, such as to ride in bike lanes when available but never on pavements. ⠀

🛴 Scooters can be left anywhere, but if you leave it in one of several designated indoor spots around the city, you get five minutes free on your next trip.⠀

Couleur Cafe returns to #Atomium for a second year 🎵

🎶 Brussels' popular summer music festival, @couleurcafefestival, returns for three days of live music and good vibes around the Atomium this weekend (29 June-1 July) with international headliners including Gregory Porter @gregoryportermusic, Leon Bridges @leonbridgesofficial, Ziggy Marley @ziggymarley and Young Thug @youngthug.⠀

🎡 Organisers say the vibe on the site is just as important as the musical lineup. Live at the Atomium, more than 50 musical artists entertain audiences while acrobats, giants, jugglers and more parade the festival grounds.⠀

🍕 There are also "chill zones", where festival goers can relax in hammocks strung in trees and more than 40 food stalls serving authentic international foods.

Brussels’ cultural scene is alive and kicking over the summer. Some of the city’s biggest and best cultural activities take place in the holiday months, including #Ommegang and the Summer of Photography ☀️

And if the weather isn’t on your side, you’ll find plenty of indoor options with a host of excellent museum exhibitions to enjoy. Check our culture pick for the season on thebulletin.be!

#Brussels shopping centres attracting more visitors⠀

🛍️️ According to new figures released by AG Real Estate, the country’s largest property group, its City2, The Mint and Galeries Anspach shopping centres have attracted more visitors in the first quarter of 2018 than similar shopping centres across the country.⠀

⬆️ The three shopping centres on average saw a 1.1% increase. City2 did especially well, reporting a 2.11% increase between January and May of this year compared to the same period in 2017, even though the shopping centre on rue Neuve is currently undergoing renovation works.⠀

🏢 All the retail units in the tree-level shopping centre The Mint in downtown Brussels, which reopened in 2017 after two years of building works, are now also occupied. The three new tenants are: Galét, the Liège waffle maker, the Belgian shoe brand Mano and the Mint & Basil healthy restaurant chain.⠀

🛒 Galleries Anspach, meanwhile, continues to attract roughly 22,000 visitors per day, and has seen a 13.75% increase in visitors since January of this year.

Football fever: Where to watch the #WorldCup2018 in Brussels (or places to avoid if you couldn’t care less!)⠀

⚽️ If you prefer the outdoor crowd experience, head to one of the many giant screens dotted around the capital. Several communes are planning to broadcast matches at outdoor sites: Molenbeek, Jette, Saint-Josse, Watermael-Boitsfort, Evere, Woluwe, Auderghem), and two screens are planned in Schaerbeek.⠀

⚽️ The Football Village - Cheer on your favourite team from the relative comfort of The Football Village’s new home at the Steigenberger Wiltcher’s Hotel on Avenue Louise. There’s a giant screen in the courtyard of hotel and viewing is also possible from indoor big TV screens (useful if the weather turns foul). ⠀

⚽️ Bars and cafes are usually authorised to screen matches as long as the screen is not visible from the street. In the city centre, there are no shortage of possible viewing sites. As well as the Irish pubs, sports bar The Big Game (near the Bourse) wants to guarantee you’ll catch every angle with no less than 25 screens, while Rooster’s bar boasts eight TV screens and two large projectors.⠀

⚽️ For craft beer drinkers, Le Barboteur on Avenue Louis Bertrand in Schaerbeek, will ensure your thirst is quenched as well as screening every game. For a younger student vibe, head to Korner Ixelles on Avenue de l'Université. It is taking reservations to guarantee a good seat for each match. ⠀

⚽️ Hotel lobby bars could be a quieter option. Thon Hotel, Brussels City Centre, is screening every match in their World Cup Lounge. While the Crowne Plaza Brussels is organising a happy hour between 18.00-19.00 on match days in its Brasserie Deco Verre. At the Pentahotel on Chaussée de Charleroi, all games will be live streamed on seven TVs and one massive big screen. ⠀

The non-competitive race is designed as a unique way for runners and hikers to discover the Belgian capital by visiting cultural and historical sites. Find yourself navigating cinemas, bars and metro stations, ⠀

with the additional challenges of staircases to overcome. Starting and finishing in the historical centre, this year’s trail focuses on the Parc du Cinquantenaire and the European district.
