Deserve’s a strong word isn’t it? Sounds icky and entitled to think that you * deserve* inspiring and fulfilling work.
I don’t think it is and I know that it’s 100% achievable.
So often women tell me they’re frustrated with their jobs, bored even. They’re work’s not working for them but they don’t want to rock the boat. They have flexibility (ish), their boss is more or less accommodating and generally their job works for their family for the time being.
Lack of fulfilment is simply the price they pay for time with their children. .
But it’s not working for them. They’re frustrated and stuck. .
It definitely doesn’t have to be this way. .
I know because I found myself in a similar situation 5 years ago. I was a single parent, working hard in a corporate job and I was unhappy. I didn’t particularly enjoy my work, my light was slowly going out and my confidence dwindling with it.
I knew I had to do something for the sake of my wellbeing but also for my son. I didn’t want him to have a mum that was going through the motions, biding her time until she could do what she really wanted. I wanted him to see me at my best doing work I love now when it would make a difference to him, not in the future when he was all grown up. .
So I worked out what I would love doing and I made the leap. I founded my company to support women to make sense of their careers after children and find work they love and here we are.
You can do that too. Whether you want to change direction, make it to the next level in your organisation, or return to work with confidence after a break, you can find fulfilling and inspiring work and in so doing you’ll be shaping your children’s understanding of what it means to work.
So if you’re trading flexibility for fulfilment, then know that both are possible. We need more people to feel inspired by what they do. Because inspired, motivated people do their best work which leads to progress, innovation, creation and so much more.
If you want to consider your career options, a good place to start is to work out what you actually want. I'm hosting two workshops in May to do that. DM me for more info.
