#cheers to summer solstice! What’s your number one thing you like to do in summer! ⠀⠀
#iwonderwine;
😎🌱 Along with summer comes hot days,🌞 perfect for swimming but not necessarily for grape growing. The optimum growing temperature for grapevines is between 25 - 35C, temperatures above 35C shuts down vine photosynthesis, it can also cause sunburn to the grape skins.
⠀⠀
☀️The concept of growing degree days (GDD) was originally introduced by Winkler in 1935 in order to define the climate of different viticultural regions in California. GDD are calculated form April to October in the Northern Hemisphere and from October to March in the Southern Hemisphere. A growing degree day has to have a mean daily temperature of >10 C. Every grapevine variety requires its own amount of growing degree days to bud break, bloom or ripen.
⠀⠀
🌤️Climate and especially temperature can either have a negative or positive effect on vines, while the amount of sunshine and rainfall will effect grape composition (sugar, acidity, phenolics). Extreme climatic conditions, such as frost, hail or heatwaves can have devastating effects on grapevines.

NO PLANET B

Today is the summer solstice, which begins when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is most inclined towards the sun directly above the Tropic of Cancer and the sun reaches its highest elevation in the Northern Hemisphere. This causes the longest day of the year, with 17 hours of sunlight and according to astronomers is the real start of summer.
We all love summer, but there is an alarming trend we can’t continue to ignore; Earth’s climate is warming. In the Antarctic and Greenland, we’re losing thousands of tons of ice per second. That’s 300 billion tons a year, which is a scarily large number and the rate at which these losses are occurring is increasing. In the U.S. the most recent decade was the nation’s warmest on record. The hottest days and nights have become more intense and frequent since the fifties, and there has been a market increase in the duration, intensity and frequency of extreme heat events, to say nothing of extreme weather events. And while all this is happening, we’re so inundated with the misdeeds and scandals of the White House; most of it is going unnoticed.
This is just one more reason we need to up our game and get the word out that it’s vital we begin to change the political landscape. We need to bring facts, science, and reason back into our collective decision-making and the only way to do that is to vote out the flat-earth crowd. Let’s go Blue in 2018 and deep blue in 2020. The future depends on it. There is no planet B @blueravenartist

What do whales and climate change have in common? A LOT!

Right now, our Government's Zero Carbon Bill is open to public consultation. This gives every single one of us a unique opportunity to make our voices heard on the biggest threat facing whales and dolphins at a global level – climate change.

Food sources, migration patterns, and the breeding success of marine mammals are just some of the areas under threat from climate change if we do not reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. We need to make sure that the Zero Carbon Bill will be a long-lasting and effective measure that takes environmental, as well as human, considerations into account.
This is where you come in.
We have drafted a submission which you can simply copy and paste to send to the Ministry for the Environment. It responds to the aspects of this bill that will directly impact marine mammals.
Make your voice heard by sending through your submission today.

The leatherback turtle is the largest sea turtle species on earth ranging from 4-8 feet in length and can weigh up to 900kg. They propel through the water using their powerful front flippers that can span up to 3m, while their rear flippers are used to aid with direction (Lasala, 2018). Leatherbacks have delicate jaws meaning they can only eat soft bodied animals such as jellyfish which are composed of mainly water with poor nutrients. Similarly to other species of turtle, leatherbacks migrate extreme distances for breeding and feeding purposes, travelling as far as 10,000 miles across the pacific (Eckert, 2002). Despite this species persisting for over 100 million years, the pacific population of leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) has dramatically declined in the last 25 years which has been linked to fisheries, meat harvesting and in more recent years climate variability (Jones, 2012). Recent studies of climate change projections show that with increased ocean temperatures many sea turtle behaviours have been altered such as nesting times which may lead to altered incubation conditions, breeding success, hatchling dispersal and even sex ratio (Tomillo, 2015). Wastern Pacific leatherback populations have plummeted more than 80% along with Eastern pacific leatherback declining by more than 97% (NOAA, 2016). Many organisations are working hard on solutions to #climate #change and effects it may have on species including the leatherback turtle. Conservation actions are needed for the survival of this species and many others so get involved and do your part to #ReduceClimateChange.

Remember how I said I lost my voice last week... Well, the reason I lost my voice was because of this turtle here... @uniofqld sent a bunch of us researchers to @ladyelliotislandecoresort to learn how our research can make an impact on global change & #climatechange. .
.
.
For me, I'm looking at the application of #artificialintelligence and #machinelearning in construction 🔨 to increase efficiency and reduce wastage, and in parallel to that, I also write on floating structures and am fascinated with #seastedding. With the latter, there is so much to learn about how to develop sensitively on a pretty barren area (it's a coral cay island) and to plant up such a lush forest over 30 years practically in the middle of the #greatbarrierreef - and an #ecotourism business (with infrastructure) - that is a sustainable success. It's impressive.
.
.
A bunch of us were snorkelling everyday for hours and after 3 days (I'm a terrible snorkeler and I admit to being a little freaked out with the many sharks we were swimming with 😱)... I practically drank half the ocean following turtles and octopi (alas, didn't see any mantas) and lost my voice. Still, it was #sensational. The water clarity was spectacular and it would've been the perfect honeymoon location. .
.
.
There was a moment when I was looking up at the stars and it hit me that I have never seen the #Milky Way with my naked eye. It's so strange. I grew up in all these urban places thinking that you could only see this with a telescope or something... which is silly because the Milky Way has found its way into so many legends... so it must be visible to the naked eye. And watching it just spread across the night sky over the swash of the ocean... what a treat and a reminder of how small we are. .
.
.
Poor Nic had to take care of the little man while I was away (the longest I've been away from the bub). I rushed back from the island to pick up the baby (Nic couldn't make the pick up time that day) and did our handover before the watchful gaze of #michaelkirby (see last post). .

The summer solstice (Today), also known as midsummer, occurs when one of the Earth's poles is tilted the farthest toward the Sun. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere (Northern and Southern). For that hemisphere, the summer solstice is when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky and is the day with the longest period of daylight. At the pole, there is continuous daylight around the summer solstice. On the summer solstice, Earth's maximum axial tilt toward the Sun is 23.44°
Since prehistory, the summer solstice has been seen as a significant time of year in many cultures, and has been marked by festivals and rituals. Traditionally, in many temperate regions (especially Europe), the summer solstice is seen as the middle of summer and referred to as "midsummer". Today, however, in some countries and calendars it is seen as the beginning of summer.

It's going to be a hot summer! We got you covered! 951.290.AURA

Did you know that food packaging makes up to 2/3rds of the trash we throw out each day?
I’ve always thought I was an excellent recycler, but until a recent article in the NYtimes I had no idea how much of the stuff I was throwing away was questionable, or that these habits could actually make a batch of recycling so undesirable that it could be sent straight to the landfill.
There so many things we can do to reduce waste since so much trash comes from the kitchen.
Here are 8 tips to reduce kitchen waste - for a healthier you and a healthier planet. Check out the link in my profile or go to www.nourishedbite.com

Ceres. Ceres is the smallest dwarf planet in the solar system and the largest object in the asteroid belt(33rd largest object in the solar system; accounts for 1/3 of the mass of the entire asteroid belt). It’s also the closest dwarf planet to the Sun(only one located within the inner solar system). Named after the Roman goddess of harvest and corn, Ceres was discovered by Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi in 1801. It was the first object to be considered an asteroid in the solar system and was classified as a planet for 50 years after its discovery. Ceres has no known moons(only dwarf planet to not have one). Ceres has an orbiting distance of 413,700,000 km(2.8 AU) and an orbital period of 1,680 days(4.6 years). Ceres is the only object in the asteroid belt that’s known to be rounded by it’s own gravity. It takes Ceres 9 hours to rotate once on it’s axis. The dwarf planet has a diameter of 950 km and a mass of 9.39*10^20 kg(0.01 moons). Every second, Ceres loses 6 kg of it’s own mass in steam(plumes of water vapor shoot from the dwarf planets surface; first recorded observation of water vapor in the asteroid belt; its believed to be caused when portions of Ceres’ icy surface warms). The average temperature on Ceres is -106 degrees Celsius. Ceres has a surface area of 2.8496*10^6 km^2 and a gravity that’s 0.27 m/s^2. The dwarf planet is composed of mixtures of water ice and various hydrated minerals such as carbonates and clay. Ceres has a thin and dusty outer layer, a water-ice mantle, and a rocky inner core. Two bright spots have been located at around 19 degrees north latitude on Ceres inside a crater. They’re believed to be water ice or salt because they’re very reflective. Scientists believe Ceres may harbor an ocean of liquid water underneath it’s surface.
