Video by @FransLanting and @ChristineEckstrom When the female chimp we knew as Farafa led her young infant, Fanta, to a secret waterhole in a forest in Senegal, we witnessed something that made us wonder about the nature of chimps—and our connection to them. Fanta was just one year old and had never experienced a water hole before. While her mother watched, she explored the water’s surface at first with a leaf, but then she discovered her own reflection and began to interact with it, poking at it, making funny faces, and ultimately kissing herself, like a human child might do in front of a mirror. When we showed this video to Jane Goodall she was as enchanted by this display as we were. Fieldwork with chimps is hard, but being able to capture glimmers of insight about our fundamental kinship with chimps makes it all worthwhile. There are less than 200 chimps left in Senegal and their future hangs in the balance, just like it does for all chimps in Africa. As we gather together with family during this holiday season, let’s embrace our next of kin on the great tree of life. We can all help chimps survive by supporting the individuals and organizations that protect them and the forests they depend on. One of the charities we support throughout the year is @rippleafrica. The money we donate helps this wonderful organisation to teach communities in Malawi how to plant trees so that they have a sustainable and plentiful supply of wood for building and firewood for cooking. They are eager to learn, even at a young age.
Ripple Africa have a strong belief that providing a hand up, not a hand out is far more effective as it empowers communities to achieve a sustainable future, so we are delighted that our donations help in this way.
If you're feeling generous and would like to donate to this inspiring charity, we'd love you to pop over to their Instagram page to find their website --> @rippleafrica. Thank you 🙏

Our wildlife research unit interns often witness nature at its most awe inspiring. This lion, resident at the game reserve our interns spend time at, feeds on a zebra the pride had caught.

On our way out of the CKGR, we found this poor Kudu stuck in the fence. Not knowing if the park rangers would find him in time to save his life, we stepped in to try help. Watch the video to see what happened in our ^^^ bio ^^^to see how it all unfolded!

Night sky in the most remote game reserve in Africa, no light pollution and probably no people within a 100km radius, apart from villagers. Here you can see two dwarf galaxies just above the tree.

Millions of Elephants once roamed Africa. As of today, 90% of them are gone forever. It's estimated nearly 100 Elephants are killed each day – that's roughly one every 15 minutes. Now we can only find small pockets of herds roaming in the wild.
On World Elephant Day we encourage everyone across the world to set aside time and research the current issues surrounding the poaching, habitat loss, and exploitation of Elephants. See what you can do to help preserve and protect this magnificent animal from extinction.

One week before Yoshi goes home! 🌊🐢 Today we celebrate her and the joy she has brought to the @2oceansaquarium over her 21 year stay 🐢🎉Yoshi arrived in 1996. She was the size of a dinner plate when she was rescued from the net of a Japanese fishing vessel. She now weighs 183kg and is estimated to be between 25-30 years old. She is showing signs of wanting to nest, and it is therefore suspected that she has reached sexual maturity. It is only fair that she be sent back to her big blue home, where we hope she may find a worthy, handsome husband, and contribute to the loggerhead turtle population in the wild. 🐢💚🐢 she will be missed but wishing her all the best on her journey into the beautiful life that awaits her 🌊💙💚🐢

They taught me in Anthropology that Chimps our "cousin". I see why they had the nerves to postulate such theory😂😂. #Chimps #Wildlife #Conservation #Playtime #NotMyCousins😀🙅👏

Bio-bridges are such an important tool to reconnect wildlife, enabling them and the local communities to live more sustainably. Body Shop, a British cosmetic, skin care and perfume company has been doing a great job building bio-bridges in India, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia. Recently a £2million scheme to create 10 new bio-bridges has been launched by Body Shop! Great job guys!

Also got to spend time with the delightfully derpy, Yogi-esque Borneo sun bear - the world’s smallest bear. Snuffling, tumbling, tree-climbing muppets that are basically walking cuddly toys. I ❤️❤️❤️ rather a lot. .

So today was a happy Monday. 😆 The only blues I experienced were on the end of my brush! 😆💙 The lovely Mel from @ecoceanic came to visit me and we sat in a cave by the sea and painted sea creatures all afternoon. Uh huh, it was as magical as it sounds. ✨🌊🎨 Check out @ecoceanic for all kinds of cool ocean related, eco friendly products! You can see some on our painting table. 😀🌊💙 Thanks for a stunning afternoon Mel! 🐳
