Earlier this week, I was listening to a presentation by a new friend. He was also a potential business partner, and someone who was at the top of their game in experience and expertise.
Deep into our conversation, everything was going really well... when at the 19th slide, a typo popped out mid paragraph, an inversion of the "i" and "e". I pointed out this mistake triumphantly, as if I had found the missing piece of the puzzle! For that moment, I basked in my victory. "Eagle eyes! Can't let that typo past me!" It was not one second later that I realized my silliness. Out of all this amazing conversation, this fascinating exchange with someone I respected that I would bring up something so so so insignificant.
Laughing it off now, I think this story shows how critical one can be, without recognizing the larger context. Especially for designers, managers, and entrepreneurs, our eyes pick up microscopic flaws easier than others.
The old cliche of always having room for improvement is only partially accurate; missing the perspective that things are still overwhelming amazing. We're all in the process of evolution, growing, and adjustment.
Everything is already perfect, and there's still ways to get better.
