“Be kind to all creatures; this is the true religion.” - Buddha.
What do you do when your whale watching trip turns out to be a bust? Head over to Coral Island and jump overboard with some goggles and fins!!
Coral Island offers some of the best snorkelling in Sri Lanka. A few kilometers north along the coast from Nilaveli is an outstandingly well-preserved array of live reef including cabbage coral, home to a dazzlingly colourful collection of tropical fish.
This was one of the best impromptu moments of my life. Felt like I was in an episode of Blue Planet, all I needed was a Sir David Attenborough voice over.
Breaks my heart what we humans are doing to this planet home of ours. Can’t believe that future generations may not get to see some of these beautiful creatures we take for granted. We need to be mindful of where things like balloons, sky lanterns, etc. end up. They do not go to heaven. They land in the ocean and choke turtles, kill dolphins and whales; and the ribbons entangle birds. More often than not, they end up on a beach as litter. Even the ones marked "biodegradable" can still hurt animals before they have a chance to break down. Even animals on land have been hurt and killed by balloons too, they eat them when they land in their hay/grass. Sky lanterns and balloons have started fires when they get entangled in power lines; sometimes setting homes, power lines, trees and buildings alight. They can also entangle an animal despite being "biodegradable." There are many safe alternatives to releasing litter into the air for our loved ones, such as planting a tree and watching it bloom, or blowing bubbles into the air. It is good to celebrate; and grief is indeed a painful process. But in our grief and as we celebrate, we do not need to cause others grief. There are many environmental problems facing our planet, however, this is a very simple one for us to solve. We need to do better.
Nilaveli was a major highlight of my trip. Thank you @fathilfaleel for a most memorable and amazing visit. Bohoma stuthi my friend.
