1. #NairobiNationalPark (06-19)

Sad to hear of the death of Dame Daphne Sheldrick, of David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. She had received global attention for her work raising more than 200 orphaned baby elephants. Daphne was the first person to successfully hand raise a milk dependent new born elephant and rhino. I am so lucky to have visited the sanctuary in Kenya and know her work & efforts will continue on. #damedaphnesheldrick #sheldrickelephantorphanage #sheldrickfoundation #sheldrickwildlifetrust #sheldrick #kenya #africa #orphans #elephant #babyelephant #davidsheldrick #davidsheldrickwildlifetrust #davidsheldrickelephantorphanage #bottlefeed #mud #play #amazingwoman #heart

Yesterday our guests packed a lot of experiences into one day.

We started off by visiting the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi which turned out to be a sad day as it's founder Dame Daphne Sheldrick passed away. She leaves a legacy that will last forever. Then we went on to Giraffe Centre to see and feed the giraffes.
Our final visit was to Kibera Slum - which is home to 1 million people and the second largest urban slum in the world. We visited a family of 10 who live in dire, hot and cramped conditions (they still have to pay the equivalent of £30 per month in rent due to how central the slum is - which relatively speaking is high rent in Kenya). We will be supporting a fish selling business for the family. After this we played a game of football with the Kibra Young Rovers who GEF are now proud to be the official sponsor of. As part of the sponsorship we will be providing kits, equipment and an exchange programme with our Chaka and Iten teams.

The guests now go separate ways. Alan and Claire have flown home, David, Myles & Peter go to Masai Mara for 3 days of safari whilst Susie, Karen, Lorna, Cosy, Gideon & James will be running an activities camp for 26 of our young children in Karatina.

Tenker med takknemlighet på første gangen @nrkchristine tok meg med til @dswt og vi fikk møte Daphne Sheldrick. Her sitter hun (mars 2015) og skuer utover sitt rike i ettermiddagssola. #ripdaphnesheldrick #ripdaphne #davidsheldrickwildlifetrust #davidsheldrick #davidsheldrickelephantorphanage

“It is all very raw but I must share with you the passing of my incredible mother Daphne Sheldrick. What an example she was to us all, and I feel blessed to have been able to call her my Mum because she was quite simply ‘one of a kind’. She was a national treasure and a conservation icon. Daphne passed away yesterday evening, Thursday 12th April, after a long battle with breast cancer, a battle she finally lost. Her legacy is immeasurable and her passing will reverberate far and wide because the difference she has made for conservation in Kenya is unparalleled.

She will be sorely missed, but never forgotten, and this is what Daphne drew the most comfort from in her final weeks; knowing that her memory and work would continue with the tiny steps of baby elephants for generations to come and that the work that she pioneered has been able to achieve so much for wildlife and wild places throughout Kenya. She died knowing that she will continue to make a difference each and every day upon a land that she held so dear to her heart through the work of The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, thanks to a dedicated team she leaves behind. Daphne was fortunate to live long enough to preside over mud baths at Ithumba with well over 100 orphans, ex orphans and wild friends frolicking, and be able to say to herself, ‘but for I’. What a gift she leaves us all with, as she really is a shining example of the finest of humanity. Thank you all for your love and passion and support.”

So sad to read of the death of Dame Daphne Sheldrick today. She was the co-founder of the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage in Kenya and since the 60s she and her late husband have done so much to keep elephants and many other animals safe from poachers and harm.

She was an amazing lady, her story so inspiring, and her legacy amazing. RIP Daphne x

Today I fostered this orphan with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. I’ve been listening and watching orphan rescues over the course of weeks, always coming back to this girl...and although anyone can foster any orphan, we seemed to share a common thread. So she is where I begin my support. Her name is Kuishi which in Swahili means ‘to live’. It comes with great sadness to discover this morning that Dame Daphne Sheldrick passed yesterday after a long battle with breast cancer...I would have loved to have ventured to meet this incredible matriarch and conservation icon. Hopefully someday I will venture to visit DSWT and visit with her soul. My love and appreciation for the entire DSWT family. https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/ #dswt #daphnesheldrick #angelasheldrick #davidsheldrickelephantorphanage #davidsheldrickwildlifetrust #iloveelehants #banpoachingworldwide #united4wildlife #unitedforwildlife #kuishi

What very sad news today to learn of yesterday’s passing of Dame Daphne Sheldrick. An amazing woman who founded the wildlife & elephant orphanage (the #davidsheldrickelephantorphanage )at which I recently visited and adopted one of their baby elephants. 😔

I read her inspiring autobiography on my travels through Kenya, and I am sure that the entire wildlife community is saddened by the loss of such an inspirational and influential leader. •
I’m sure she’ll be greeted at heaven’s gates by Mother Nature herself. 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘
RIP Dame Daphne. ...

It is with such sadness to pass along the news to you that Daphne Sheldrick, co-founder of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, has died after a long battle with breast cancer.
We chose this as our brokerage’s charity many years ago because of their (and our) devotion to the care and rehabilitation of orphaned baby elephants whose parents were killed for ivory.
The more we delved into the charity, the more in love with it we became. David died years ago, and Dame Daphne carried on the vision and was known worldwide for her elephant work.
We bow down to her today and will never, ever give up the fight to stop poaching — with our love to @dswt and in her memory we salute her efforts on this planet while she was here.
As Mahatma Gandhi said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” 💔🐘

The world has lost a giant in the conservation of wildlife, most especially, elephants in Kenya. Daphne Sheldrick will be greatly missed for her endless work in the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. It has been my dream to visit the elephant sanctuary. And meet this wonderful woman. Her work will continue on until there is an end to the need to take in baby elephants orphaned by poaching of their mothers for their tusks! #davidsheldrickelephantorphanage #daphnesheldrick #elephants #kenya @campaignagainstcannedhunting

Orphaned baby elephants take mud baths as visitors look at them, at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya, 10 April 2018. When this little guy was just 3 months old, he was found alone by a local community member with no other elephants in sight - a victim of human/wildlife conflict.

When I launched Blue Whale Communications (@bluewhalecomms ), I knew that I wanted to make a difference not only in the day-to-day lives of my clients, but on a much broader scale, too.

So I immediately included Corporate Social Responsibility into the business, and committed to making annual contributions to organizations that focus on wildlife protection and ocean conservation.

In 2018, we donated to @oceana_canada and adopted this little guy - Maktao - from @dswt.

But we wanted to do more, and this blog is a continuation of those efforts. Our mission is to improve the relationship between humans and animals, to protect all wildlife and end animal tourism.

If you're interested in fostering an animal from the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (they take on all animals, with an end goal of returning them to the wild when ready) or just interested in learning more, check out www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org

The Happy Hippo website coming soon.

When it’s time for the midday feeding all elephant orphans come to the feeding place in groups... first the small babies, then the bigger ones. Little #Musiara is so greedy for milk that he sneaked back after the babies returned into the bush in the hope to get more milk. But when he realized that his plan failed, he complained loudly! 🐘🍼😆

It’s not difficult to guess whose brother he is... 😉 This is Walter, the younger brother of DSWT Nursery Head Keeper Edwin. Walter is one of the keepers of the DSWT Reintegration Station at Voi. And like his brother he gives so much love to the elephant orphans! 🐘❤️

Breakfast convo:
Hub: What do you want for your birthday?
Me: An elephant.
Hub: You never disappoint.
So, meet my new baby: Shukuru, short for Nashukuru, which is Swahili for "I am grateful." I think we were made for each other. 🐘 💕 (I also fostered Esampu and Maktao because they need me). 🐘🐘. Thank you @dswt #davidsheldrickelephantorphanage

Did you know that you can say hello to an elephant by blowing in their trunk? They will blow back 🤣 These intelligent creatures will recognise your breath next time. 🌬️

I touched a baby elephant’s arse for first time. It was as bristly as I imagined 😊
