Disappointing loss after coming off a sweep of the Mariners at home. The Yankees couldn’t get that big hit with runners in scoring position, as they were 1-9 in those situations, and only collected four hits the entire game. There were numerous opportunities to do so, but no execution. The one and only run pushed across was an RBI single for Judge that brought home Torres. Thanks to Giancarlo Stanton’s leaping catch in the fifth, the Rays were limited to two runs the entire game and the damage was limited that inning.
Sabathia definitely didn’t have his stuff today, despite only letting up two runs. He left many pitches over the plate, giving up nine hits in only five and a third innings. Adam Warren got the Yanks through the sixth inning, holding the deficit where it was. Luis Cessa made his first appearance in a while, throwing two scoreless innings, both walking and striking out a pair.
Judge: 1-3, RBI, BB, 2K
Hicks: 1-4, 2B, K
Game 2 of the series begins at 4:10 tomorrow. We can still take this series. Sonny Gray takes the mound, who’s looking build on his last start.
