Miss Grits has been working on gradually building up her ability to spend time completely alone.
With our household and flexibility, we have been able to control much of her “company” and situations every day, at all times since she first arrived.
We know not all households are able to do this which can make progressing through the stages of separation anxiety at the dogs pace difficult.
We have been only working with Grits on being completely alone for short periods of time. Prior to this she has had company in the form of ourselves, one of the other dogs or even the cats as a presence in the same room as herself.
Today we put her in a separate room of the house away from everyone.
To monitor her we set up both a wireless camera to record her session and check from our cell phones as well as a baby monitor for more accurate real time sound / visual.
She did a fantastic job and settled down for a nap after a while. She didn’t go barking crazy and only whined for a bit before settling down.
We are so proud of her progress!
She will be working on crating and alone time in different parts of the house. We will vary it with us home, out in the yard or outside for brief periods of time (possibly even getting in the car and driving around the block). As she continues to improve, our set ups to mimic real world departures and scenarios of leaving her alone will gradually become reality as we test her with short outings away from the house.
