I had heard about a fabulous new donut shop in Kensington and finally made my way over to try it last week. What stands out to me @dipped_donuts are the inventive flavours that they offer. The base donut is the same for all flavours with the difference being the icing topping. The donuts are made fresh throughout the day and I was lucky enough to catch a fresh batch coming out from the kitchen mid-afternoon. The texture is fluffy and soft, however, a bit more dense than I'm use to and therefore can be quite filling.
I tried 4 different donuts ($3 each) and for the most part, the flavours were quite bold and delicious.
The Lemon Lavender was amazing with a bright and sweet lemon flavour bursting in your mouth which is immediately followed with an incredibly fragrant lavender taste. I was very impressed that the lavendar perfectly balanced the lemon since it is usually an aftertaste rather than the main star. Kudos!
The Blueberry Basil has a blueberry glaze which is infused with organic fresh basil. For this flavour, the blueberry flavour didn't come out much and it tasted more like a sweet berry flavour. However, what completely redeems this donut is that strong bright basil flavour. I think if this was renamed, "Sweet Basil" I would have been completely satisfied with this donut.
The London Fog - which is made with organic Earl Grey glaze mixed with vanilla - was the one disappointment. The donut tasted mainly like vanilla with a slight bergamont aftertaste and was much too sweet for my tastes. I would have liked a stronger tea flavour.
The Black Sesame Matcha was my favourite of the four. The black sesame had an incredibly aromatic roasted and nutty flavour which was well paired with the strong creamy matcha flavour. I felt that both flavours took center stage without one overpowering the other, but at the same time, still worked in harmony with one another.
