A fireplace needs a mantle
My previous place still had a woodburning fireplace. A rarity in our area and no longer permitted for new builds unfortunately. I do have to admit though, that it was very useless for heating the place. But it looked good. Well, sort of.
Whoever built the place decided that white square tiles would look nice around the fireplace. And who needs a mantle.
I happened to disagree. It just took me a while to have the courage to tear the tiles off and install a mantle. A very basic one, but I think it was still better than the tiles.
I decided to build it out of cedar. It looks nice and is easy to come by at the local home improvement stores.
The hardest part was not assembling the frame (lots of dowels) or attaching it to the wall (No Nail or some such glue), but putting up drywall, mudding and sanding it without making a big ol’ mess in the place. So I put up a ‘cleanroom’ around the fireplace. Much to my partner’s amusement. It wasn’t easy working in the space but I figured it beat either covering everything else in the apartment or cleaning everything else in the apartment. Neither were options I fancied all that much.
