Mental health awareness week ! Being a mama to a teen for the first time I am reading, watching and learning. Being a health practitioner I see teens in clinic with various health issues but most common ones are anxiety, OCD, self harm, annorexia, ADHD and this Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)...this has a name ..the fact that you are a leader dies not matter but you have ODD.

So one of my favourite doctors Dr. Siegel (whose quote I use in this image) explains that the teen brain is wildly creative. At this time in their life their dopamine levels (more on this neurotransmitter in my ecourse) can drop to their lowest and peak to their highest. Our own neurotransmitters are a 1000x more potent than the average street drug. Yes, you read that right. I studied pharmacology for my BSc and boy am I glad I did, It's been so handy 😉

When the dopamine drops to it's lowest the teen gets bored and the reaction is to bring it up. How do they do this? By finding risky sports like skate boarding, parkour, climbing also they get bored of that 'safe home environment so they go looking for their 'new tribe' (think rights of passage when some would become leaders, others nurturers, others doctors (herbalists etc), hunters, gatherers, they each have a role, a purpose which elevates their dopamine. Some may try street drugs, alcohol, smoking to get this dopamine high...so understand the teen is ready for new things and exciting things...enough of the mummy-ing, ...they push away as the parent is boring (low dopamine) they are looking for their purpose.
What does society do to teenagers? What do majority of schools do to teens?  They label them, after they realise they cannot be controlled. There is no place for a leader (the hunter) in a mainstream school, unless they connect with that teacher that inspires them.
If the teen brain is as amazing as science is finding it to be then these kids are the game-changers, shape-shifters, world-changers not kids with ODD or other pharma drug induced deficiency syndrome.

Just finished Mindsight by @drdansiegel and it was a great reminder that no matter how long you have been doing something - like meditating or reading psychology books - there is always more to learn. Bout to nerd out on you. This book not only maps out how various emotional or unemotional responses to events or people in your life are a result of earlier experiences, but it takes it two steps farther by 1) explaining what is happening in your brain on a neuroscience/biological level when this happens (for example perhaps your brain is favoring the left/right side) and then 2) how to literally change the way your brain is wired to fix these imbalances or closed off neural pathways through various mindfulness and meditation exercises. It discusses how mindfulness can scientifically change the way your brain processes the world around it and how it activates the various parts of it that you subconsciously shutdown out of self preservation by whatever you experienced in life. It’s been a truly fascinating and optimistic look at how science, emotions, and mindfulness work together to promote balance and healing - in your relationships with yourself and with others. I totally recommend it.

Take time to ask kids how they feel, and help them be specific, so they can go from vague emotional descriptors like “fine” and “bad” to more precise ones, like “disappointed,” “anxious,” “jealous,” and “excited.” One reason kids often don’t express the complexity of a particular emotion is that they haven’t yet learned to think about their feelings in a sophisticated way that recognizes the variety and richness within them.

⭐️What emotional ZONE do you live in?
-
Based off of Tina Payne Bryson and Daniel Siegel there are three emotional ZONES that you can go to interchangeably throughout the day which varies in each person.
The Zones:
-
💚The green zone is our “flow state”. Its a place where your calm, integrated, think clearly, make good decisions, have your self “together” even when your triggered. This is when your nervous system is balanced and not overstimulated. It is the goal zone to be in.
-
❤️The RED zone is where chaos lives. Its the area where your sympathetic nervous system kicks in (your fight-flight response). Your body starts to prepare itself to fight or flight, which cause behaviors that can be destructive and at times aggressive.
-
💙The BLUE zone. where your parasympathetic nervous system kicks in and you become more rigid or shut down in your behaviors. The complete opposite of the red zone, but none the less destructive.
-

the green state is in a receptive state and the red and blue are in a reactive state. A goal is to get your nervous system in control to be more receptive. When we are in a reactive state your not in control of your nervous system, thus it takes over creating inability to utilize proper problem solving techniques and empathy is thrown out the window.

If you feel like you are not in control of your behaviors, your sort of right if your in the red or blue zones. BUT, you can start to get in control by expanding your abilities to stay in the green zone as much as possible, which is called your “window of tolerance”.
-
By expanding your window of tolerance you can create the skills needed to stay in the green zone longer and come back to it fast once you have left for another zone.
-
Increase your awareness today about what zone you tend to stay in when triggered. Ask your self if your behavior is more rigid and shut down OR if it’s more chaotic. If neither than your in the 💚. It can be subtle behaviors that may take skills to even identify 🔍.

What language do you use in your home or in your day-to-day life relating to #Mindfulness?
When my son was young, a good friend told me about the book The Whole Brain Child written by Daniel Siegel. While I read this book, my son loved the pictures throughout it- which showed examples of angry ways to talk or calm ways to talk children.
When he is starting to get upset, we talk about "Flipping Your Lid" (which is an example from the book about how your brain stays calm or gets reactive)... we also make lists about how to work through BIG or difficult FEELINGS and tape the list somewhere visible for both of us so we can refer to it from time to time.
