Last summer I hit the lowest point of my life personally and professionally; I was disillusioned, cynical, angry, depressed and felt disconnected from everything when I serendipitously met a board member of @stoppoachingnowofficial
She told me about their amazing anti-poaching efforts, the R&D trip they were embarking on in five days to visit these conservation sites in Africa, and joked that I should join them.
✨
While wildlife protection has always been very close to my heart, my logical left brain had 10,000 reasons to shut that down. Then something deep inside me shifted when I heard the itinerary included Zambia, where I grew up.
This whisper grew each day and even though my mind was screaming at me to stop being crazy, it took over my body, went on an autopilot mode, and to my astonishment every single obstacle I thought would never work out started sorting themselves out one by one.
✨
I bought my ticket the night before the trip and jumped on the plane and headed to Africa, not knowing much or having met anyone, since the person I met wasn't going. Yet somehow I felt an intense knowing that everything in my life, both good and bad, placed me exactly where I was, to be a part of this.
✨
What I experienced there completely changed my life - or rather, it put me back on a path more aligned with who I've always been - and now I have an opportunity of a lifetime to give back to my second motherland.
✨
As a newest board member of @stoppoachingnowofficial I am chairing a fundraising spin event on 4/29 @cyclebarweho to restore elephant population in Zambia as a precursor to reintroduce black rhinos, which have gone extinct in the area. I hope you can join me - you can sign up by visiting stoppoaching-now.org or a link in @stoppoachingnowofficial bio
✨
If you are unable to join us, pleeeease consider making a contribution to my on-line campaign (link in my bio)
Any amount helps and I can personally vouch for the people involved in these efforts, both in Africa and the US, having met and worked closely with them.
✨
Thank you for caring and thank you so much for helping to make this world a better place.
With my eternal gratitude and love,
Yoi

Esampu has been outdoing herself in terms of mischief-making. When the mini matriarchs thwarted her attempts to whisk away one of the babies, she gave Tagwa a retaliatory shove as she stormed off. Unfortunately, this created a domino effect which ended with the little one toppling over! After receiving a stern rebuke from Mbegu, Esampu stomped into a thicket, where she expressed her anger about the whole situation by dramatically breaking branches.

One of my birthday gifts to @dfabreezy was fostering a giraffe & elephant through @dswt. Meet the newest members of our (virtual) family: Kiko & Ndotto.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Kiko was found all alone, without his mother or other giraffes nearby, at one week old. He was flown to the Nairobi Nursery & was amazingly trusting, affectionate, & happy to fraternize with his rescuers. Baby elephants in the nursery love to spend time under his belly resting their trunks on his side & neck, which he happily tolerates.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❤️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ndotto was found, the day he was born, after his herd got mixed up in a throng of cattle, sheep, & goats. It’s believed the human presence of the tribesmen that frightened the mother, leaving her baby behind. The tribesmen guided him back to their ‘boma’ (homestead); his umbilical cord was still attached & he was learning how to walk. A group of tribesmen endured a dangerous journey to notify The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, so they can pick up Ndotto & properly care of him. He was transported, via helicopter, to the nursery. After a 3.5 months in care, it was confirmed he was born premature by a few months. He remains tinier than any of the newborn babies coming into DSWT care, yet he has a huge personality.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❤️

I stayed watch the elephants transport people up and down the Amber fort for hours , this place which is very famous for riding. While I watched, I saw one elephant walk past me. The mahout told me her name is Rani .
When I walked to look close in her eyes I discivered that both eyes were blind.
I was incensed. Both eyes blind, she still must transport tourists, up and down many times per day amidst the weary ambling of many other elephants, to the Amber Fort in Jaipur, India.
Rani is not alone in having to labour on into her twilight years, in spite of injuries and infirmities. There are many, similarly blind or sick or lame or just plain too old, who work until they are falling down. If these beautiful Giants have lost their sight, one would think that the overpopulated biped, eyes clear, could see for them, could truly see them and know that this is wrong.
It is time for the human being to take responsibility for their actions. It is time to care for the others living. It is time for the animal to be raised to a position of respect. One day, and hopefully soon, images like this will cause us shame and dismay at our lack of humanity. One day perhaps we can be proud of the legacy that we leave for our children. It always depends on what we do. "You cannot cross the sea by merely standing and staring at the water" - Tagore.

Regrann from @dswt - There’s something remarkable about rhinos! The DSWT’s commitment to the species goes way back. In the 1980s, we helped establish Kenya’s first fenced rhino sanctuaries. Through they years, our daily patrols — on the ground and in the air, in partnership with the KWS — have helped monitor and protect the country’s remaining populations. Most recently, we refurbished the Meru Rhino Sanctuary, a stronghold for the species in Kenya. Thanks to your donations, we were able to establish two new security bases, build an extended electric perimeter fence that incorporates wildlife corridors, and provide a new Land Cruiser to enhance security efforts.
Meru was a place that our founder, Daphne Sheldrick, held very dear — and through the upgraded rhino sanctuary there, we are proud to offer this remarkable species a brighter future.

Regrann from @sheldrickwildlifetrust - Please send Enkikwe your well wishes — this brave bull recently survived a terrifying lion attack, but he’s receiving the best of care and on the mend. For the past few months, Enkikwe has been spending more time away from the Keepers and instead joining Laragai’s semi-independent group on their daily walkabouts. All of this is a natural part of the reintegration process, and by all accounts, he has been thriving. So, the Keepers were dismayed to see wild-living orphans Makena, Tumaren, and Rapsu escorting a wounded Enkikwe back to the stockades earlier this month. The four-year-old had been attacked, likely by multiple lions, and we suspect that it was the older elephants’ intervention that saved his life. Our veterinarian was immediately flown in to treat him and while he is still in recovery, his wounds are healing and he seems to be doing better each day. The other elephants have been a fount of comfort and support, checking in on him often and clearly eager to have their friend back in their herd.

#Repost with @Repostlyapp @marlaporter No words can describe the sadness felt by the passing of my greatest hero in life, Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick (1934 - 2018). For over 25 years, Kenya-born Daphne Sheldrick lived and worked alongside her husband David, during which time they raised and successfully rehabilitated many wild species. Her involvement with wildlife has spanned a lifetime, and she is now a recognized International authority on the rearing of wild creatures and is the first person to have perfected the milk formula and necessary husbandry for infant milk-dependent Elephants and Rhinos.
Since the death of her husband, Daphne and her family have lived and worked in the Nairobi National Park, where they have built the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and its pioneering Orphans Project, into the global force for wildlife conservation that is today. The key to Daphne’s success has been her life-long experience with wild creatures, an in-depth knowledge of animal psychology, the behavioural characteristics of different species, and of course, that most essential component, a sincere and deep empathy.
In the 2006 New Year’s Honours List, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Dr Daphne Sheldrick to Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, the first Knighthood to be awarded in Kenya since the country received Independence in 1963.
Born from one family’s passion for Kenya and its wilderness, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is today the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world and one of the pioneering conservation organisations for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa.
Angela Sheldrick, the daughter of David and Daphne, who has been managing all of the Trust’s activities for over a decade, supported by her husband Robert Carr-Hartley and their two boys Taru and Roan, will ensure that David and Daphne’s legacy continues. .

Some photography purists resent photo manipulation, but others enjoy how it has opened up photography to new people and new ideas. Caras Ionut @carasionut is a Romanian photographer and digital artist who makes a great case for digital art and photography. He has created an extensive body of images that are beautiful, enchanting – and impossible.

Ionut says that his imagination and his work are captivated by dreams and by the autumn and winter seasons. Although positive dreams are a big theme in his work, he says he also likes “to visit the darker side of what people may see of dreams, not necessarily what one would see as negative, but possibly a dream that one could not quite understand or may feel alone.” . .

Elephant week: In memory of Dame Daphne Sheldrick, this week we focus on elephants.
Daphne Sheldrick was born in 1934 and spent nearly 30 years working with her husband, David - the first warden of Kenya's biggest national park, Tsavo East. After his death she founded the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (@dswt). "She was the first person to successfully hand raise a milk dependent new born elephant and rhino, knowledge that has seen more than 230 orphaned elephants saved in Kenya, and countless other infant elephants in countries across African and into India" read a statement from the trust's website. May her soul rest in peace and may her conservation legacy live on to eternity.

Rescuers from the @DSWT couldn't save Kuishi's mom when she collapsed of starvation during a severe drought but they were able to give her the love of a new family. She's one of 29 orphaned elephants in the care of their Elephant Nursery in Kenya and loves nothing more than playing with and caring for her new ‘brothers’ & ‘sisters’. "All Life has just one home, the earth, and we as the dominant species must take care of it." Dame Daphne Sheldrick.
▪️
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (@dswt) posted this quote this morning, a very fitting tribute to Dame Daphne Sheldrick, who lost her battle to cancer on April 12.
▪️
I thought it seemed like a good day to share a new photo of our adopted elephant Maktao, who is growing, thriving, and learning how to be an elephant at the wildlife rescue.
▪️
Nairobi had a lot of rain in March, and little Maktao, normally the rambunctious trouble maker, was confused about where to seek shelter! In the wild, at his age, he would stand underneath his mother for protection from the rain. One of the older elephants, Mbegu, was providing shelter to Maktao and Sattao, but Maktao wasn't sure where to go - under Mgebu or under his keeper's umbrella ☔️

On average, an elephant is killed every 25-minutes. Poached for the ivory trade, a victim's family members can be left orphaned in the wild. In our most-recent #GoProForACause piece, we follow The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (@dswt) through Nairobi, Kenya. Their organization rescues orphan elephants and reintegrates them into the herds of Tsavo National Park. They also fund anti-poaching units to patrol the park and conservation efforts to limit conflict between humans and elephants. Visit our YouTube channel to watch the full piece and learn how to get involved.
