REAL TALK: Let’s welcome upon us WINTER SOLSTICE; the darkest week of the year and in turn is going to highlight some of our darkest parts in order to shine more light so be prepared and to understand what I mean, here’s a personal view to the point I almost didn’t post anything today because I didn’t feel the best, then I realised it’s normal and possibly someone else out there needs that reassurance today, so here we are (with a flashback pic for good measure 😏) but today I woke up with a smile and as far as my physical world went today was a good day; emotionally though, today was unbelievably tough especially as the afternoon came around, it took all my strength to really process what was actually going on and I managed all the way home to my door where I burst into tears because I left my keys at home and was locked out... was I crying over keys? Fuck no, but I pulled it together and within 30 minutes I had hurled myself onto my bed and histerically unleashed the tears.. it was painful and it was a very familiar pain - the excruciating heartbreaking pain I felt a couple of years ago, from what was, you guessed it, a painful heartbreaking experience and that as many times as I’ve said the words about letting it go, came the time today to actually feel the pain and release it for good, it was tough, but also felt like a huge relief, it’s made me feel vulnerable and a little scared, it caused emotions of guilt, anger and most of all grief but I am always one to vouch that I never want to be that social media influence that pretends I don’t have a bad day, because it’s as much of the human experience as any other feeling and emotion - embrace it. -
To anyone who’s struggling or had an off day or even a great day, be kind to yourself and keep your head up.. if you want to get angry do it, want to be sad and cry, go for it and don’t stop till you’re done, but just know what’s coming is always better than what’s been ❤️

Topic of the Day: Hand Grips

The last couple of topics we briefly went through were the Horizontal and vertical pulling/Rowing. With that being said there are different hand grips that can help alter the exercise (to some extent). -
-
For example, as an avid believer in coaching movements for proper posture and strength, I love to utilise the Supinated Grip on most horizontal rowing (eg Barbell Bent Row shown) exercises as it supports Thoracic extension and external rotation.

Winter is certainly here but that’s not stopping me from getting my daily walks in. Do you need some extra motivation to get out in this chilly weather? -

Here are a few tips: - Find a friend, you will be far more motivated to go out for a walk or do a workout if you have a workout buddy
- Set yourself a winter goal (this is mine, to walk everyday). Tell a friend to keep you accountable. - Take the dog, let your dog be the reason to get out for a winter walk, they still need to be walked in winter 😆

Flexing it cause why not! No workout today, because I went to physio for my shoulder. Almost back to 100%! It's going to take a few more weeks but I'm finally allowed to start doing shoulder presses! Watch out yo! Lol. So that's why the flex, to honour what I've gone through and to celebrate coming out the other end!

Tomorrow I'm going to combine both my workouts, as Friday I am working out of town. Its going to be brutal. #iloveit

Tri-Set Wednesday? 🤔

So it’s a day late but the exercises are just as valuable! On the flip side this current muggy heatwave has also meant I’ve finally been able to make use of my terrace this year! ☀️
.
This Tri-Set is perfect as a 5-10 minute heart raiser, a warm up before your main workout or just for one of those days when you’ve not been able to head to the gym/get out for a run/walk and you just wanna feel like you’ve accomplished something. It targets the full body and there’s some variations in there for you to make it harder/easier.
.
You don’t need big weights or fancy equipment to get that feel good factor from exercising - complete this circuit and you’ll know exactly what I mean...
.
1. Hand Walking Planks x30 seconds - keeping your core engaged and body nice and straight, raise yourself from your elbows up on to each hand and then slowly lower back down! To make this harder, transition from elbows to hands using both hands at once.
2. Single Leg Glute Bridge x10 each leg - extending your ‘resting’ leg with this exercises works your core and hip flexors whilst increasing resistance on your working leg. Remember to squeeze your bum at the top!
3. Side Planks x30 seconds - Raising your upper leg is a killer- it works your glutes and abductors whilst challenging your balance and core stability. Dropping your hips in a plank position is the easier variation of the two but still great for your core and obliques - perform this one to reps of 15-20.

Beginners - 3 rounds
Intermediate - 4 rounds
Pro’s - 5 rounds

Rest Period:
Beginners - 45 seconds
Intermediate - 30 seconds
Pro’s - 15 seconds

💪Shoulder Rehab💪
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
@tony.comella makes it look simple as he gives us a peek into how he goes about rehabbing a shoulder injury!

The shoulder is a complex joint, requiring a combination of multidirectional mobility, stability, and strength. In this particular individual’s case, rehab was focused on neck and shoulder pain, as well as radicular pain in the arm. An emphasis was initially placed on mitigating symptoms with neck, shoulder, and forearm soft tissue work, CARs (controlled articular rotations), activity and work modification, and lots of education. She worked hard on her rehab program as I helped guide the process.

In the video above, I am showing you a glimpse of her current progress. As pain has reduced, less emphasis has been on manual treatment and more on training the shoulder at a higher level in order to progress toward her goals.

Considerations shown:
1. Closed chain (multi-directional)
2. Stability emphasis (multi-planar)
3. Foundational strength (push, pull)

Rehab varies person to person, but in my opinion, the ultimate goal should place emphasis on movement and education. Manual therapy is a great tool to utilize for pain mitigation, but overtime should be faded out in order to build autonomy.

Locking out a joint is completely fine. Our bodies were built to lockout. The exception is when velocity is added to the joint. When velocity is added then damage will more than likely occur.
