The QL is a muscle that the average back pain sufferer needs to get checked out! It will bring you to your knees crawling on all 4 when acting up!
.
The QL is a low back stabilizer, helps to depress your ribs during exhalation, and acts to laterally flex and extend the lumbar spine.
.
Before you start treating your QL always make sure you saw a health professional first who confirmed you doesn’t suffer of a herniated disc!!! Also make sure your health professional has cleared your hips and pelvis!
.
If these things are clear you take a @BLACKROLL®️ BALL, Lacrosse ball, ⚾️ or 🎾. Place it above the posterior iliac crest, just to the side of the spine at the level of the hip and try the release exercise which you can see in the video.
.
You can either perform it as shown in the video, placing the ball under your QL and moving the hip alternately in flexion and extension or you roll slowly among the muscle, trying to identify areas of tightness or discomfort. Pause on these areas for several seconds and the tightness should begin to ease. Ensuring you roll from the origin to the insertion is a good way to target 🎯the entire length of the muscle.

I find it hard to teach a #yoga class these days without reviewing a little #anatomy before class. This morning’s class was hosted by the great #endowarrior, @glowwithgretchen, and I led a special #yogaforendometriosis based class for some very special ladies. Im discussing the contents of the #pelvicbowl in this little clip (the context was that there’s A LOT happening in a small space and that when there is #endometriosis or #scartissue present that space can become restricted, crowded, and the structures inside of it can fight for nice healthy blood flow). I love using my #essentialanatomy5 app to give my students an appreciation of the pelvic bowl and it’s contents. Side note: the membranous structure in this video is actually the broad ligament which surrounds the uterus and anchors is in place. It is highly interconnected with the rest of the #fascia in the #pelvicfloor.

Are you sitting down at the moment? Pay close attention to which side you lean more on. Odds are you favour one side over the other. Whichever side you prefer, will cause the opposite side of your low back (specifically the QL for you out there) to tighten! In 🅰 you can see that the person is leaning more on his right butt cheek and that causes his spine to twist into a minor functional S-shaped scoliosis.
In 🅱 if you place a book underneath that person's right buttocks he will seem to have a straighter spine.

In ©️, the book is placed under the left buttocks and that sends the spine into a major S-shape! So imagine if you're sitting a certain way, and you have your wallet in one of your back pockets. The wallet might be the reason you have low back pain! So not only is it important to release the left QL in this particular situation, you have to make sure you rectify what's causing it to be tight in the first place! (Ie. Your wad of cash is fucking up your back playa!).'

THIS MUSCLE IS A REAL PAIN IN THE NECK!
.
You know that knot at the base of your neck that everyone says is in their traps? 😖 It's not in your traps. It's deep to them in a muscle called the levator scapulae.
.
Levator connects from the upper inside border of the shoulder blade up into the neck. And because it works to shrug the shoulder blade up ⬆️(Levator = elevate; Scapulae = shoulder blade), whenever you spend hours all tensed up in front of your computer or phone, it can take on a lot of load and become overworked.
.
That can lead to it being quite sensitive and causing you a constant low level ache from the base of your neck up. Some people call these trigger points. I just call them hypersensitive areas, but to me they're all the same thing. They hurt. So let's do something about that.👍
.
Use the technique in this video for 30 seconds to 1 minute to help decrease some of the pain and tension through your neck and shoulder. Then tag a friend who needs it too and share the wealth!

Fascia, one of the largest yet most unrecognized connective tissues of the body, craves movement & hydration – which becomes lost in the repetitive movements, business, and sedentary lifestyles frequently found in today’s world. Fascial tissue is found throughout every system of the body; functioning as a 3-D scaffolding system that supports the structural integrity of the body by providing protection, shock absorption, and a highway of communication for sensory input to the brain. Myofascial pain is most often generated from one of two sources – either skeletal muscles or connective tissues that are constricted by tight fascia, or from damaged myofascial tissues.

This workshop opens with a discussion of the physiology and theory behind SMR, bringing awareness to some of the common, habitual patterns of physical tension, and exploring how these habits also influence and reflect patterns of mental and emotional tension. The second half of this workshop is dedicated to “rolling” through a self-myofascial release sequence to ease common areas of resistance. Come explore the body, mind, and emotions that often become “stuck” in the connective tissues of the body – roll, release, and restore body, mind, and spirit!

This is why reviewing video is important, especially if you don't have another FP member to watch you. I had been performing this exercise how I did in the first clip for a long time. Something always felt off about it, but I couldn't figure it out by feel alone (subjective). So I filmed myself doing it (objective). Within 3 seconds of watching the footage I could see the lack of hip extension and knee flexion, thus lack of connection between the upper and lower body through the superficial back line.
The first video was taken yesterday. Today (second video) I tried to make the adjustment, and it appears to have worked out alright. Still room for improvement, obviously. Just an example of how using objective measures to test competency is extremely important in a world where subjective opinions dominate, even in 'science'. Cheers ya'll, keep slangin!

EDIT: I've also never felt so decompressed throughout my whole body before as I did after doing these 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

DO YOU SUFFER FROM:
❌Nagging joint pain in the legs, lower back or hips ❌Walking with discomfort ❌Hips locking up ❌Bad posture ❌Trouble sleeping
❌Lack of explosiveness in the gym or sports

If you do, it is due to your hip flexors, the psoas [so-az] muscles!!! You see, our hip flexors are the engine through which our bodies move. They control balance, our ability to sit, stand, twist, reach, bend, walk and step. They help to support the strength and health of your entire body.

If you’ve found you're spending (or wasting) time stretching only to find it's having minimal effect, it is because you need to attack the muscle from a variety of angles using a variety of exercise techniques and modalities in order to "unpack" the muscle in the right way.

There are a number of specific movements beyond simple static stretching you can use to unlock and loosen your hips, legs and back.

Some of these include:

PNF STRETCHING:
PNF is an acronym for proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation. It is a technique where you are activating a specific muscle in order to relax the muscles around a joint so you can decrease the stiffness around a joint.

FASCIA STRETCHING:
In this unique technique, we are targeting the tissue that muscles are surrounded in and working on loosening and lengthening the fascia. Few people understand the negative effect this tissue can have on your body.

ACTIVE MOVEMENT STRETCHING:
A form of active movement that isn't about holding a stretch but rather taking your body through ranges of motion that will better prepare you for your workout or sporting activity.

The stretches are listed in order by pictures.

You can also recieve active release with the stretches with me to get the trigger points activated forcing the muscle to relax with no more pain!

This is by far the best course I’ve ever taken (not to mention the most expensive) but honestly worth every penny mainly because of the instructors teaching the course. The only bad thing I have to say was there wasn’t enough room on the evaluation sheet for all the positive feedback I wanted to give to each one of these guys

They made five 8 hour days seem like a weekend course and the level of support and encouragement was unreal. I often doubt myself and on day 1 initially felt like i didn’t belong here and that I wasn’t smart enough to pick up the material...by day 3 that all went away due to the ongoing reassurance from the instructors

This has been the 4th course I’ve taken at @dts_edu and I’ve always had such a memorable experience....but I most certainly won’t forget the awesome time I’ve had, the amazing connections I’ve made and my new FST family. Dts is the truth 🤙🏾 .

What triggers most headaches is not the actual cause!

Red wine 🍷 ? Weather 💨 pressure changes? Stress? Poor sleep 💤 ? Poor posture 📸?

Yes these are all TRIGGERS of headaches and migraines but they are rarely the cause!
.
For the headaches that we see most ▶️ tension, migraines, cervicogenic ⏩ and that effect you the most, the underlying cause of the nervous system and the nerves that travel into the skull 💀 or onto the scalp and face!

🔹 Triggers can cause stress or irritation of the nervous system that at a certain threshold, triggers a pain signal to travel down from the nerves of the face, neck and scalp into the brain that creates a 🤕 headache and pain. 🔸 In terms of the neck - NERD ALERT - there are nerves that leave the face and scalp in a nerve bundle called the spinomesencephalic tract and actually travels back down into the neck. The nerves in this nerve tract then communicate with nerves in the neck that come from the joints, muscles and other tissues of the cervical spine

🔹Irritation of the neck joints, nerves and muscles from postural distortion or other stresses causes irritation in the nerves of the neck.
.
🔸Now here is where the interesting part is: because of the neck nerves’ connection with the nerves of the face and scalp in the spinomesencephalic track, the brain gets confused and thinks that the pain that actually originated in the neck is coming from the head = HEADACHE
.
🔹Why does this science matter to you? Well, if you have headaches and you have postural distortion and you have a tight neck and shoulders, it is likely that this nervous system connection is what is causing your headaches!
