By the 2/3 of the race, out of nowhere, the transmission of the Argentine's Ferrari had failed at Stavelot. Being so far from the pits there was no way to get him back and into another car.

Fangio, so, had nothing to do but watch Collins' progress as the Englishman lead a race for the first time.

Start of the 1956 Belgian Grand Prix.

Rain had struck Friday's practice session and it arrived again on Sunday morning. The track was still damp and the skies were grey as the fifteen starters set off.

Fangio got away slowly, allowing Moss into the lead followed by Castellotti, Collins and Behra.

On Stavelot Fangio got past Behra and soon moved past Collins also.

Juan Manuel Fangio once again proved his mastery of Spa with a pole time nearly 5 seconds faster than Moss in second and more than 9 seconds quicker than the previous year pole position, set by Castellotti.

Fangio was getting closer Moss running faster in each lap.
Juan Manuel Fangio set the fastest lap of the race (1:44.4) on the final lap. Despite his efforts, the Argentine finished the 1956 Monaco Grand Prix in second, only 6.1 seconds behind Moss - this distance was 32 seconds 13 laps earlier.

The car number 26 was driven by Peter Collins (54 laps) and Juan Manuel Fangio (46 laps). Both shared the 6 points for the second place (Fangio also scored one extra point for achieving the fastest lap).
This was the first points and the first podium for Peter Collins.

Due to a change in regulations, Fangio only received points for his shared second place rather than for the fourth place as well. Only Castellotti received the 1.5 points for the shared fourth.

Eugenio Castellotti dragged Fangio's tattered car home in fourth, 6 laps behind the leader, thanks to Manzon's misfortune.

Previously, Castellotti had complained about having to race the damaged Ferrari but his earlier disrespect with Fangio hadn't gone well with the team manager, who sent him to complete the race.

On the third lap of the 1956 Monaco Grand Prix Fangio overdid things at St. Devote and span. The reigning World Champion tried to spin around but was only halfway through the move, when Musso and Schell bombed around the corner.

Fangio then finished his turn and carried on in fifth after this rare moment of hamfisted driving.
