until you’ve lived here, you can’t quite grasp how new yorkers have earned their reputation of extreme resilience and bad-assery. new yorkers walk through more than just crowds of wandering citystuck terrorists and gridlocked traffic. they walk through clouds of soot - from the survivors of 9/11 to my very own friends in today’s explosion less than a block from my office. they walk through endless aggressive and unwarranted curses, jingling cups of the helpless and desperate cat calls while simply trying to get from work to their shoeboxes. they walk through thick summer humidity, thick winter snowstorms, and thick waves of body odor on any given day. they also walk through the most iconic and beautiful city on this planet and are always proud to call it home. chaos is a way of life here, and new yorkers adapt with more graceful agility than i’ve ever seen anywhere else. and until you’ve lived here, you also can’t quite grasp why this chaos is so worth it.
