Portland, Oregon: if you are in the area, Unlikely Hikers is doing a meet-up and nature walk at Whitaker Ponds in NE on Friday November 24th as part of the #OptOutside campaign. All are welcome! Bring the kids! This is less of a hike and more about spending time in nature, acknowledging the land we recreate on, identifying plant life, acknowledging how privileged we are in Portland to be able to access nature so easily, as it is not like this everywhere, AND there will be an optional photo contest. Two winners will receive a $100 gift card to @REI! More info on fb or the blog (linked in profile).
Please note: I don’t mention “Black Friday” or not shopping very intentionally in my #OptOutside posts. I don’t believe in shaming people who need or simply want those deals. Nature isn’t as accessible everywhere as it is in Portland and getting outside is never truly “free.” I wrote a little more about this on the FB page and in my IG Story. There’s also a great thread at @melaninbasecamp about these issues.
Location: Whitaker Ponds, Portland, Oregon. Ancestral land of the Chinook, Multnomah, Kathlamet & Clackamas. #whitakerponds
