“You ain’t got no Flacko in your serato?”
A$AP Rocky’s 2015 project AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP was such a fun album to listen to. I smiled, bopped my head, and got up and jumped around like a fool. I felt like Big Quint to be honest, but all jokes aside, I enjoyed this project so much. The majority of this project is definitely great for vibing out to, either in the car or in bed. The three-song stretch of Canal St., Fine Whine, and L$D throw in those vibes with Rocky’s aesthetic of echoing adlibs and distorted vocals (Fine Whine), as well as hitting you with beautiful sequences on L$D especially. But, Lord Pretty Flacko Jodye 2 hits and I lost my mind. The beat, the flow, just everything about that track I love, even if it doesn’t entirely fit the theme of the rest of the tracks. ScHoolboy Q’s feature was awesome to hear on Electric Body, and he delivered that intensity that makes me love hearing from him no matter what. Jukebox Joints is one of those songs that makes me adore this album. Rocky got KANYE on here, and I don’t care what haters will say I love hearing Ye on here and pairing that with Rocky’s lustful lyrics and the jazzy sample left me smiling. In all honesty, the features tie together the album so well, from Kanye and Q, to even UGK on Wavybone, which was so great (the beat switches and flow switches were incredible), to Lil Wayne on M’$ where it feels like Weezy is communicating with the thumping beat as he eats it up, and of course Rod Stewart and Miguel on Everyday. That track is a hit and is probably the best mixed track on the album, as the Stewart sample is interwoven with Miguel’s rendition and A$AP’s bars masterfully. However, Back Home made me write in my notes nothing except two words: “utterly speechless”. A$AP Rocky lets loose whatever bars he had left with a fantastic flow, all leading up to Mos Def, Yasiin Bey himself to deliver my favorite feature on the entire project. It left me so happy and it makes me happy that guys that my generation enjoys can show respect to the guys that my dads generation enjoyed. Thank you Lord Flacko and FLY HIGH YAM$.
